    Dropped her off this morning.

Drove her a fair amount over the weekend and the hesitation started to really annoy me on the way to GHR. Hoping it isn't the piston rings, but we will see. They'll be able to diagnose today during the major service.

Until I hear back from them.

Got Anja back. Safe to say the hesitation is gone.

Was due to shit all continuity to one of the spark plugs. After replacing the plugs and a distributor lead, she blew a shit tonne of smoke so the guys were a bit worried, but from what I can tell, it would have just been burning all the oil that was built up there.

The bad news, the camshaft pulley is loose so there is a knocking and the engine is quite tired. It should make it to Melbourne but we'll see what happens. It should make it alright as long as I take it easy.

Hopefully get the rear drums some time this week and then I can swap the drums this Saturday.

Should hear her now that she's running nicely, makes the purchase of the exhaust well worth it with the note she has when going through the gears.

Got word that I should be able to pick up the drums before the weekend. That means up on axle stands and I get to change them over on Saturday.

Been thinking about finishing off a set of RS' for the long drive over so that I have a spare wheel, otherwise I don't. I could potentially grab another Ford steel wheel but I have everything I need to finish off a set of the RS', including tyres.

Picking up the drum brakes tonight. Super excited.

Means I can have them on Saturday and start planning a set of RS' for her.

                Will commence building them tonight.

Plan is to get her up on axle stands this evening and rear drums changed over. Then I can have a quick look see and what size I can run at the rear and go from there.

Going to build the RS' square though, can't be bothered running staggered. See what I can salvage from my parts pile.

Hopefully photos of progress later tonight.

Okay, tonight I left work early because I wanted to get the rear end sorted on Anja as quickly as possible. Which meant I would be able to start building the RS' as fast as possible. Alas, it was not meant to be, 400nm of torque holding the axle nut on got in the way unfortunately.

Regardless, I got the 5x114.3 drum brakes separated from the wheels.

This is the damn axle nut that I'm trying to get off. Hopefully tomorrow I can pick up a 1/2" drive T bar and a mate can lend me his trolley jack handle and I can get the bastard off.

Last weekend I forgot to mention that I installed a new head unit and reinstalled the door cards with new 4" two way speakers in them.

So being the depressed shit I am, I figured I needed to just see what the RS' looked like on the drum. Because weird.

Oh and I picked up this OEM tachometer from Chris last Saturday too.

                        IMG_0844 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

When I start the new engine build I want to run a MagnaSpark electronic ignition so I'll have a provision straight away for the tachometer instead of running a new wire now off the stock distributor.

                        • I dont know if the type 3 has something similar, but my friend used his ash try in his beetle as an Ipod dock.

Ran the wires through the back, found a upright charging bracket and fastened it down.

                          • Yeah, I could potentially do something very similar, but a lot of work for not much gain as the head unit has the USB input on the front, that and I don't have an iPhone as my "daily" phone so I have to use the auxiliary cable for everything.

Had a similar setup in my bug though!

                            • After last nights failed attempt and the help of one Mathew (skytup on here) and his girlfriend Kodie, we were able to get the axle nuts off with the help of a breaker bar and a length of tubing Matt took from work.

What happened next, we definitely didn't expect. The drum faces that I got were too small for the drum backings of a Type 3. Luckily the transaxle that I got the drum faces off of still had the drum backings that I needed and we went and grabbed them off.

Everything from there was smooth more or less. Got all the Type 3 stuff off and replaced with the smaller Type 1 drum backings, hooked up the handbrake cables, bled the system (not sure if did it right but will take it to brake specialist on Monday to get it all adjusted 100%) and then bolted up the Ford steel wheels.

I didn't get any photos during the drum change, which kinda sucks a lot, but I did snag these photos before I packed everything in for the night.

I like how the 195's look super wide from the rear. Can't wait to check out what 205's look like when I get a chance to suss out the 16" RS', hopefully spend some time tomorrow checking out what widths I can go etc.

                              • So, I spent some of today playing around with the set of 16" RS' to get the specs that would be nice for daily-ing.

                                IMG_0850 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

I built up a pair with a 2" lip at the rear (16x8.5 +10.95) and a 1.5" (16x8 +17.3) lip at the front. This is how it looked.

                                IMG_0851 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

                                IMG_0855 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

So, unfortunately for daily-ing these wheels would just be crazy to run without major camber at the rear to tuck them under. And being an IRS setup, camber isn't easy to come by even when lowering it.

Then came the following. A 1" lip at the rear (16x7.5+23.65) and a 0.5" lip at the front (16x7+30).

                                IMG_0857 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

                                IMG_0859 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

                                IMG_0860 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

These fitted much better but the rear could still be a bit of an issue when daily-ing. I may have to drop the rear a spline to get that tiny bit more camber.

                                IMG_0868 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

I stripped the paint off of the 1" lips that I got from Stu so they're raw again.

                                IMG_0876 by sebastienpeek, on Flickr

Have to get some sand paper and rub them back so I can then polish them up.
