Early this morning, a friend came to help me with the cleaning of the gearbox. I knew it was not an easy task, but decided to give it a go.

So here are some before showing the general state of the GETRAG box.

Not too much grease and dirt, but it had some heavy embedded pitting on the alloy-magnesium casing.

    Our Weapons:

Household cleaners, Various brushes and sponges, old trusty Wheel Brightener, CG All Clean, Meg's APC, Valet Pro Citrus Tar and glue remover, wire wool and some cheap-o-mf-towels.

At first we decided to try Valet Pro Citrus tar and glue remover:

Excellent results on baked on tranny oil, I have to admitt.

We pre-soaked the whole gearbox with Meg's APC and rinsed.

Attacking the inner casing with various sponges, wire wool and all of our available cleaners

After the inner casing was cleaned we attacked the exterior. This was a very time consuming procedure sadly

After 3 hours under the hot sun, it was time to bring the tranny inside the cool shade, and have some relaxing time.

As for the side caps - looking tired before

    But looking almost perfect now

After the long degreasing session, we stumbled across some weird pitting.

Metal polish and a wool polishing ball was the weapon of choice.

Unfortunatelly, we couldn't get all the pitting out even after three sets of polishing. Any ideas on how to remove those stains? Soda blasting might work.

So here are our final shots, after lots of fun and very dirty palms.

The end result isn't satisfactory in my eyes but I dont want to paint it for the moment, and leave it be at stock appearance.

    Cheers

So it has been some while with no updates here. Or not.

Either way, I have not been lazy. I was always looking to find the right time to go for a gearbox. Searching here and there, things were not easy.

One option that appeared, was a re-inforced auto one, from TITAN, that could easily stand 900whp, and has already done 9sec passes.
Drivable in the streets . . . BUT . I dont know, if I can live with an auto on the streets. I dont just want the car for strips. I also want it to have fun on my own on the street if and when I choose to. So . . . I couldnt go for the auto one, despite its being stronger, according to TITAN than the manual one, and almost three times cheaper if you also add the cost of the clutch to follow in this project . . .

So, in the end, I decided to go for a new manual one , from TOYOTA, not refurbished one, a brand new one, through TITAN Motorsports.

However, at that same time, this Supra from Greece

Informed me, that after a race, the owner was thinking of letting the manual go, for the sake of a THS-300, a 3-gear auto one, drag-queen-to-be.

So, despite the fact that I would very much prefer a new one, over a used one, that I would not know, the use it had, the potential damage or rebuild cost, with this one, that wasnt the case. We even had a ride in the Supra, and saw that it seemed to have no problem at all shifting in 9000rpm, pretty logical if one takes into consideration that this car was rarely used. So we made a deal to not only take the gearbox, but more things that were on it, like the shifter, the shifter linkage- which is Supra MKIV Short shift, TRD Gearbox mount, the valves, the slave cylinder, and what is more the first part of the central axle to be used maybe later.

So it was an offer I could not let go, and grabbed it. I know I could buy a new car with its cost. Or two. Or three. But I could not go for another gearbox.

Some pics of when it arrived in my garage. Me, smiling is an understatement.

Here you can see the TRD Gearbox mount, plus the very rare M11 Studs coming out for the axle

Side removable caps that allo for playing with the clutch - I wish the VAG ones were like that too

    Cleaning to come soon

Love the vintage feel in this

    And I also got this

    Fun Times to Follow

    Cheers guys

Hello there, and thank you very much for your comments.

Seats, are TILLETT Seats, and will be receiving them in some time I think . . . They are not porsche seats, they are full CF seats, with Alcantara trim and I think they are the best I could buy. Not cheap AT ALL, 3,5kg approximately each one of them. Cant wait.

As for the car, I am searching for a 2JZ Gearbox, a V160 one, so I will be going RWD.
Had a ride with a Supra today, first of my life, and I loved the lift at 2nd gear.

Love the build man! I have never closed this tab since i first started reading, a couple of months ago, always hoping for some updates, haha. I love your craftsmanship, you are very talented. The new seats you ordered, they dont happen to be porche seats do they? And also one more question, will you keep the awd when doing the swap?

    So where were we . . .

I had left the car like this in the previous garage session . . .

Looks clean, but in reality . . .

Years of dirt there . . . and given the fact that i have NEVER, removed the lower engine, i could never clean there thoroughly . . .

Attacked with various fluids and brushes

    Looking better already

I then wanted to remove the front axles . . . I first had to undo these bolts in here . . .

Well my first socket wremch with the 17mm allen lost the battle it seems . . .

But nothing a good extension cant achieve . . .

    These are for sale too

    Then car was lifted . . .

    And i see something missing actually . . .

    Here it is

Will have a great clean up in the next days

    Obligatory 1 ManPower photo

And my friend George who was helping me, also got trapped in there - LoL

I then gave a quick cleanon the gearbox before putting it for sale

    Much more to come. Cheers

So, some things have been happening in this project, except from the TiLLeTT order.

TiLLeTT order is about two seats, which weigh somewhere at about 3,5kgs each. That is somewhere in the 7lbs area.
There were many customs options in my order, like more CF, alcantara trim options, and more. But all in time.

I also received these things from Mike @ Ringer Racing

Set of new Lug Nuts, and two AEM boxes.

Yeap, all in six-es now I guess

Then it was time to do some work on the car.

    Removed front

    Leaving me with this

    What do you say

    Time for a test-drive

And for those that said this wouldnt work . . . eat this . . .

So easy and stress-free with zero effort almost

I love cleaning sessions that will follow

Pile of junk that was removed

This is already up for sale over at ebay

    Here is the listing

ARP Bolts are out and also for sale

Engine secured in place for now, until I remove the pistons and rods too

And car, now has the worst stance ever - narrow and tall - hahahaha

    Dont mind at all

Big Thanks to my friend George who came today and helped me with the work done

    Cheers, more to come
