  • 1960 Studebaker Lark VI 2dr sedan

This is my build of a 1960 Studebaker Lark I picked it up maybe a month ago and have been cleaning and freshening up some areas that needed attention.

The overall plan of the build is bags, interior, wheels, and a little bit of paint here and there but keeping the original exterior patina.

It runs well so I'm keeping the original flathead inline 6 but going to build a split header and probably 2bl manifold for it. Not doing a full teardown because it really doesn't need it.

The day i brought her home...

First thing I did after getting it home was pull the front springs and all but the main rear leafs to see how low it sits on the stops.

Second thing I did was pick up this rack off craigslist and slap it on there

Then I pulled the motor and trans to begin cleaning them up along with the engine bay.

Taped it off and began sanding, then primer, and finally color

I also cleaned and painted the trunk floor, there was a lot of oil soaked rust which took some effort to clean but came out nicely.

In addition to cleaning the motor up I installed a bunch of new gaskets and had to repair a piece that had stripped threads.

This part forms a seal between the timing cover and the oil pan but all four threads were stripped so I drilled and tapped them to 3/8-16 and installed four ARP studs from a small block chevy header kit.

Then after getting it all back together and cleaned up I painted it with some machine gray enamel and swapped most of the hardware with zinc plated grade 8 stuff.

I also had to machine a fan spacer because I ordered the wrong water pump which was too short.

Thanks everybody, I'm turning some ideas for the rear suspension in my head, I had originally planned on running a single leaf and the bags with a traction bar to keep it on the cheap side
but now I'm considering a simple radius arm setup attached to the front leaf mount with a watts link.

I think in the end I'll be happier if I put in the time and effort to do it right and relatively cheap rather than just cheap.

Don't go just cheap, you'll end up spending more in the long run.

Small update picked up a clean transmission with the overdrive option, scored a $1.00 cartridge style oil filter canister for $25 off eBay, and put the car up in the air to begin the suspension work.

Now trying to narrow down what brackets I want to use for the air stuff.

I always enjoy seeing cars that have survived for so long getting some love. Can't wait to see how this will turn out.

Got a big piece to the puzzle today in the form of wheels and tires...and they big, well for an old studebaker that is. 17x7 wrapped in 215/50r17

Front at full bump, not bad

but the rear is where it's at
