  • Gretchen: 63 vw bug

Decided to start a build thread for my Volkswagen bug. I named her Gretchen which is German for "little pearl" which I think suits this car quite well.

    Untitled

Gretchen when she was first pulled from the barn in Oregon where she sat for around 40 Years.

She is a 63 panama beige deluxe with original paint, fender beading and running board mats. The car came with factory pop outs which is slightly rare for the 64 and down cars. The car has around 4,000 original miles to the best of my knowledge which I believe to be true based on how original this car was upon purchase with stuff like factory light bulbs, tires with almost no tread wear, and other small things such as original axle boots that aren't trashed.
Here's a close up of one of the factory tires with the made in Germany logo on the back

And as of today I have gotten her running and driving and most of the electrical working. The car was hit at some point in the front end early in its life and that's why I believe the PO took it off the road. and I've been able to fix most of the front end but the car will eventually get a new front clip when I can find one that's been un-hit in my factory color.

the mod list as of right now to the car includes.

    6" narrowed beam
    2.5" drop spindles
    Flipped tie rods
    Narrowed headlight buckets
extended/notched spring plates (may eventually go to drop plates instead)
    3 outer clicks (I believe)
40 horse 1200cc engine completely stock
    6v electronics
    Factory pop out windows

    Wheels/Tires:
front-4.5" et.+34 BBT sprintstars wrapped in 145x65r15 tires
Rear-5.5" et.+10 BBT sprintstars wrapped in 185X65r15 tires

    Accessories:
flat 4 Robri style fender guards with boot scraper
    Empi day/night mirror
    OG rear vent trim
    dual color fog light
    euro tail lights
    German export plates
    Kamei parcel tray
    center console basket
    factory radio
    Bi-flector on the hood
    Early rear mudflaps (not pictured)
Puffed peanut turn signals (not pictured)

and here are some current pictures of it. wish I would of started this build thread earlier but there will always be more updates later on.

And here's a picture of the shop where me and my friends work on Volkswagen's at.

I've looked into it but I've never really been a huge fan of them. A guy who lives close to me has built one on like all his bugs though which is rad. But I do need to cut out the front windshield rubber and get a new one in there with the trim. At some point in the cars life it went missing, and I **** moulding without the trim! Haha

Here's my old bug she was a 71 named darla and was backdated by a PO which I wasn't fond of but beyond that she was a good car.
          4" narrowed beam
          Drop spindles
          5x130 disc brakes
          5x130 studded rear drums
          4.5" and 5.5" fuchs

Sweet man! Also wish I had a shop with friends to work on cars with.

Heres my 77 which has one outer click with 2" adjustable rear plates. So about 2 outer splines relative.

I wish I would gotten 4" drop plates honestly.

Here are some pictures from when we built the front beam on this car. 6" narrowed German link pin beam with SAW adjusters and urethane bushings.

              First cutting it in half.

              Narrowed beam

After it was cut in half.

              Narrowed beam

Cleaning up the pieces of the beam to be prepped and welded. At this step we also did a 45 degree angle cut in the beam ends for good welding penetration.

              Narrowed beam

Tacked in place with the adjusters.

              Narrowed beam

After fully welding beam we clean and painted trailing arms and beam.

              Narrowed beam

And done after we got the beam bushings pounded into place.

              Narrowed beam

at this time we also cut the 3" off each side of the leaf pack and and re dimple cut them on the ends so we could remount the trailing arms with the grub screws.

What size front tire is that?

Theres so many things I would've done differently on mine If I could go back.

There the 145x65r15 smart car tires. I like them decently wide and lower profile then 135s.

here are more early pictures of the 63

when it was first pulled from the barn she had this incorrect 65 decklid on it which was actually an NOS lid. have no idea why it was on there.

                        image

and here you can see how extensive the front end damage was. Wasn't to bad but definitely took some work to make everything line up again. and like i said it will eventually get reclipped once I find a panama beige front clip.

                        image

She also had this Bahama Blue fender which was super ugly. Original front fender got damaged in collision and was no where to be found upon purchase. I got the black fender from a 61 that my buddy had and eventually sold. Im also looking for the right beige fender to install at some point.

Here are some of my friend Scott's 57 oval which is super hard! you can see it a little bit in one of the shop pictures I posted earlier. this car is super awesome and I'm very jealous of it. pretty crazy though without front brakes on those spindle mounts.

7" narrowed beam with drop spindles
                          Extended and notched spring plates
Spindle mount front wheels on temps
randars in the back with 185x65s
                          36 horse and 6 volt
accessorized with stuff like an original visor, pop outs, real albert swan necks, swamp cooler etc...
