  • Amateur Hour: '75 2002 Build

Starting a build thread so I can compete with all of you '02 dudes - never built anything before so here's my first go at it. Also employing my brother for slave labor, so he might chime in on here as well.

Bought this last year for Christmas, came with a nice bow on it-

Did some things with it for a year-
    -put my dog in it-

-took it to a gravel pit and shot some things-

    -washed it off-

you're probably bored of 2002's by now so thanks for looking, hopefully it will be as cool as Heist and CubbyChowder. In the process of tearing it apart so we'll keep you updated often

Removed the interior and glass, lucky to find that the only big rust issues are the front floorpans, looks like those are going to need to be cut out! No wonder there was a draft coming through.

      Removing the sound deadening sucksssss

Everything else is looking pretty tidy

Well this is the little bro speaking now

Over the course of the last couple months Ive been doing some work on her. Senior year of high school ends soon so this summer she will really get some time. So heres some pics of stuff.
          I cut some holes

Then my grandpa taught me to weld so I welded up the drain plug holes.

          Took the front fenders off

Had to cut a lot out because she is truly a rust bucket, this cleverly hiding under a tub of bondo

          Who doesnt

Bumper that will go on in like five years when its done

And thats all for now. I try to put in a couple hours a day but I sometimes get preoccupied with other things like friends and what not.

And btw Softg, the idea is a full restoration and we are committed as it is in a million pieces right now. Looking to get about half way this summer and possibly finish next summer.

I have some M10 and other 2002 parts I am trying to get rid of right now since I am M20 swapping. Idk if you are interested. The car looks awesome, the rust comes with the age. The metal was not galvanized so rust eventually happens. Sub'ed.

Haha! At least you're realistic about it. When I bought my 2002, I thought it'd for sure be done in 6 months, one year tops. Two and a half years have passed and I still have thousands of dollars to spend and months of work ahead of me.

Looks like you're doing things right. Taking a seemingly mint car and digging right in, tackling all the hidden underlying problems that wouldn't be noticed upon first glance. I always get excited to see new 2002 builds, these cars are so cool. Best of luck with everything!

Amazing that you can still find stuff for it- Reminds me of the freshly built 02:

Sadly the videos of the build aren't available anymore :[

Cut out some more of the bad stuff, prepping for fresh metal, think we'll grind down and POR15 the surrounding areas that just have surface rust

                              Did some more work today.

Started cleaning up the engine bay. Mostly just cleaned up the passenger side so far. Trying to keep the wires straight is tough stuff. Engine will be removed once I have everything ready to go.

Took everything out of the front

Ours had an aftermarket air conditioner in it. This air conditioner had lines running through the top of this piece pictured below. Anyone know if this was just a mounting point or if this whole piece went with the aftermarket air conditioner. This piece is on the passenger side of the engine and it has a belt running it.
