  • Do I buy mk3 rear callipers or mk4 conversion pipes and use the mk4 rear callipers i have that I was going to use on my mk1? they are about the same price.

As one of the handbrake mechs has stopped working in the mk2 callipers.

    • What a difference this upgraded headlight loom has made! Well it has allowed me to fit higher wattage bulbs that made a difference anyway.

Taken all these pictures on exactly the same settings.

Start with dipped beam. First picture is the standard setup with standard cheap 60/55w, second is same bulbs with the upgraded loom, and the third is upgraded loom with 100/80 watt bulbs

The main beam in the same order

The dipped beam with the new bulbs is almost as bright as the main beam old. Its a Whiter light too. Very happy with that. Not bad for a £10 upgrade! Might have to start carrying extra fuses though. As there is just one on the upgraded loom. So if it goes then no lights!

      • Needed a new wheel bearing and handbrake not working on one side so time for an upgrade.
Got a 6n2 polo gti rear setup on the way for the separate hub and brake disc. Got the setup for the same price as new discs and bearings for the mk2. They are meant to be stronger wheel bearings, good for lower ET wheels. Supposedly the same offset as the standard discs. Which is very important for me.

Also going to be going "mk4 golf" rear callipers too. but they are the same on the polo and most other vag cars of this age.
Already had a set of mk4 callipers so started by cleaning and painting them before my polo hubs show up. And bought the conversion hoses.

            • Got my polo rear setup all cleaned and painted. Might be able to get it fitted tomorrow. Will see.

The callipers that came with it were 2 different sizes. Luckily I have the other callipers to fit while I sort that out with the seller that doesn't seen to be responding.
Don't know how this got missed.

                  • Fitted up the rear brakes and hubs today. I like nicely painted clean parts.

Also fit a new power steering belt, old one was a bit stretched.

Brake pedal is still spongey though. Bled it a lot to change all the fluid out for new. So there was no air coming out for a lot of pumps. I had the bias valve clamped while bleeding.
Was a bit spongy still, until I unclamped it and then it was rock solid. But that was with it still up in the air.
Went to take it for a test drive and then it was really spongy.
Makes me think I need to adjust my bias valve? Sound right to anyone?

Hand brake works a treat now though!

                    • Searched for a pic of where the callipers are mounted on the mk4 and they are at 90 degrees where as on the mk2 they are more towards 50 degrees.
So I took the callipers off and re bled them with the nipples facing up. Tiny amount of air came out and jesus, didn't it make a difference! Feels like a new car now. Dead chuffed.

Also fixed my throttle cable sticking. Started to over rev when I put the clutch in to change gear. Happy now.

                      • Oh hello there!

Got myself a Digifiz setup. Got it for a bargain really! Especially since its 8k, Came with everything needed to fit, Its even a CE1 setup, and it's the version you can reset the milage on! (the ones you want) Mega bargain!
Even came with a ABS clock adjuster. Might sell it and buy a normal one since I don't have ABS. Make a bit of money back.

Came with a mfa stalk I've never seen before too. Maybe off a Corrado or something?

                            • Not sure how people can think this is ok? Twisted together wires with duct tape wrapped around for the headlight plug. Better than the masking tape I found on the jetta though. What is it about the headlight switch plug?

                              • Tidied up the digifiz loom a bit. Still need to fix the stereo wiring and add the later stalk plugs (I have later stalks fitted because of my adjustable steering column)
This loom has the heated seat bit incorporated too So I'm going to take the one I have just added to my car out and use this one.

The headlight switch plug was chopped about so I fixed that. Was just twisted together and taped.

Added a speed signal tap for the cruise control

I made the engine bay loom for the gearbox speed sensor and tacho signal. The tach signal is different from the standard signal on mk2s. Looking at the picture of the tach signal wire I might have to move my stereo amp power wire. Will see if I get any interference.
Zip tied up out the way for the moment until I get it all installed. Just prepping the car so I can unplug one loom and put the new one in.

Bought a new 8 pin headlight switch to match the new loom. And bought some new bulbs for the digifiz cluster as some are blown. Got some sweets with it

I also took the temp sensors out of the old mk3 seat heating pads and extended the wires to be fitted to my aftermarket pads.
