The only experience I have with turbines is with boats, and they have all had huge throttle lag. Have they done something to work around this yet or is it still a problem?

It is still a problem. Really, turbines like to run at steady-state, and are very efficient in that condition. For the turbine le mans cars, the driver had to spool up the turbine as he was in a corner for a good 4 seconds.
