  • I think Burroughs said a lot of what I already said, but hey, two is better than one (shout out to boys like girls holler), and its his site, so i suppose he can do as he wishes :P

I think you understand what we are saying though. Replies like this "as for taking it to the show being a waste of time, what else are we going to be doing at night in burlington, and honestly it will not be the worst car there, not by a long shot" are just an excuse. what should you be doing? Working on the car, not showing it off in its raggedy state. Again, its about being proud of your work. If I had done the work that you have done thus far I wouldnt show ANYONE... but again, thats just me, I dont consider my standards to be too high though. Im going to stop because if you havent gotten what Ive been trying to say by now then you probably wont. And again, im not ****** (again that is h-a-t-i-n-g, I dont swear...), I have done soooo many terrible things to cars that I cannot judge haha

    Keep going
    Eric

      • fixing shit or practicing welding so you can fix rust could not possibly be a way to spend a night could it?
Hatchbacks, wagons... It's NOT all the same. You want in? Don't get a mazda 3, get a mazda 6 wagon. Don't get a wrx get a legacy wagon. and theres a reason the A3 isn't called the A3 avant... Scion does not make a wagon it makes a weird van, but no wagons

        • so you'll all shut up, we didnt go to the show, it was raining
today we got some descent work done
we got it to run well completely off choke, put better bulbs in the tail lights, and put on a new shift knob

new shifter, i took a broken breaker bar and ground a flat side onto it then did the same with the shifter, and welded them together, i will clean it up later, but practice is practice

my welds, this is the thickest metal ive tried to weld, so i turned the heat up a lot, and i could really tell that it was bonding and penetrating, i also put rust proof primer on it now

alex cleaned the exhaust up really well

we headerwrapped the exhaust, and also hung the exhaust up better, and higher which involved putting some holes in our beautiful trunk

air filter we jacked from alex's dad's car, almost fits, but is kinda tall so the clips wont fit, but zip ties are cool

          hood is black now

it did start to rain before it fully dried

so it got just a bit of that weird patterning that is on the body

also i dont care what you say but this car rocks the shit out of a black hood

this was the point where the car took a crap, we went to restart it after doing the lights, and it wouldn't turn over
it was getting fuel not spark
          we changed the distributor cap
          nothing
          we changed the coil
it started for a bit but was running like ass, like it was on 2 cylinders
i tried to give it gas and it died, it wouldn't restart it after that

i think we need to tune the points, but i still dont know why it took a crap so suddenly
any help would be appreciated, but im guessing 2002faq is a better bet for that

hopefully we can work that out so we can drive it

              • I really started off liking it as a rat rod. But your attention to detail and complete lack of skill or purely lazy effort makes this build suck.

I mean look at your paint? There is more wrinkles than a old man's nut sack. Have you ever used a spray paint can? pretty much the same idea to avoid runs. I know it has been said before...those floors are completely unsafe. If you get hit in this car you will get hurt.

I read till page three and could not handle anymore after the exhaust and continuing use of road signs. Welder and 18ga sheet metal=safe and proper.(edit:finished to the last page).

I am sure I will get a ton of shit for that^ but I built a 'rat rod' and took the time to make is safe and beyond well built. You can still save this, remove that shit and euro this thing out. Weld up the floors(they are main cross support...). Then sand that paint and fix the major rust. After that pick up 1/2 gallon of bondo and go to town making it smooth. Because honestly this will never be anything more than a rat rod.
NOTHING wrong with that! I think you should give it love and time to make it worth while and respect.

Then use etching primer and repaint it in even smooth strokes lol.

I REALLY want to like this, but it is just a slapped together death trap. You have a welder to use, now go buy some sheet steel and make it right! I am shocked you are not using nails and glue.

P.S. THANKS for getting rid of those awful wheels, the RAs look so damn nice on there. I know it is your car...but that exhaust it fucking retarded.

I hope you take this to heart and not get upset, it is not my desire.

i know the paint is shit, it sprayed pretty even once i mixed it correctly, but when it was drying it rained and the paint absorbed the water then wrinkled, at some point the car will be completely resprayed, as for the floors, that will have to wait till my welds improve, and honestly at that point i may as well put a frame under the floorpans too, as for safety this car doesnt get driven, it wont get hit, this is just something to dick with the most it will see are back roads where all i need the floor for is to make sure my feet dont drag

as for adding bondo that is the last thing this needs, it is already coated in thick layers from the PO and it is cracking, if i was ever to get to doing that much body work then i would patch the panels/ buy new ones

i think everyone can agree on the wheels, although i do plan on refinishing them sometime so there will probably be a different set on there sometime while that happens

as for the exhaust, it may be dumb but if i dont let out my need for a stupid exhaust then it will end up on one of my other cars where it actually will be dumb

                  • This poor 02 haha. I like the idea you have going... not sure on the execution, but still good to see some fun coming out of it. What welder are you using? Looks like flux core? I'm not sure why your welds are so crappy, but some simple tips that can really make all the difference is a good ground (this is no joke get some copper and wrap that shit), super clean surface (wire brush the surface really well and wire brush the part you attach the ground), and don't hold it like a gorilla (keep the stickout close to the metal).

Not kidding those 3 things changed my welding. Preparation is key. This 02 is pretty much gone, but be cool if you stepped up in the future and gave her some real love.

yea it is flux core, the welder is a pretty descent mig hobart welder, alex could be more specific, but we have only been using flux wire and no gas

the shifter i was really good about grinding to clean metal, and grinding for the ground, but some of the exhaust welds we were not as careful, usually only grinding the outside surface, we will have to grab a wire brush to do more on the inside of the exhaust.

maybe with a lot of practice i can get on your level, i need a legit welder of my own because i wont have access to this one after break

You can easily do the same if not better. Gas will really change the game for you and cleaning those surfaces. I'm using a 50 year old hobart handler 120? I believe. bought it for $50 too!

With gas and some new wire you should be able to knock out anything on the 02. Good luck! Should be interesting to see what you do with it. Just keep practicing and trying new things. Might want to check the polarity on that sucker too.

                          • yeah... mhm... about that. I kinda suspected that. no gas might be killing your progress there. I can knock out pretty good looking welds/fill holes with no gas but the porosity if you grind that shit flat will kill you, and your sanity... well maybe not your sanity since you dont seem to give half a shit about the car.

                            • The paint wrinkled b/c it reacted to the paint underneath it. Just sand it smooth with 180 grit and spray again once it has cured for a week or so.

You can do solid work on flux core, no problem.
Learn by doing spots, one inch apart, see that it penetrates and try to hammer so you get it when it holds.

Then add up 2nd line, again 1" apart. Then third, and so on.
Then when you are able to tack 2 pieces together by spots you can move to the car.
Pound the area you are doing down for a couple of millimeters, then tack shit up, let cool between "rows" and wirebrush the shit fluxcore does around the seam. Then bondo the area and grind down.
                              Paint.

                              Ok?
