Test fit my wheels. They fit puuurrrrfect. Didn't even need wobbles (They are 5x114.3).
Also tried my hand at brushing some trim. It turned out gorgeous. All the chrome on the exteriror of the car will be brushed. it's going to require a ton of time but it will really be something different in the end.
I've been slacking big time on the updates. I wanted to get to a point where you could make sense of what I have been doing. The last couple weekends have been non-stop busting ass on this thing. And finally I am making the progress I have been looking for.
I rented an extremely large air compressor and sandblasted some of the detail areas I couldn't get to with the sander as well as the rusted areas. It only took 3 different trips to the store before we could see what we were doing and not get a face full of sand. But once we got the right equipment it was a lot of fun.
This was before we got the right equipment. Lol
Here are pics of a few of the areas we hit.
I needed to see what the wheels would look like once I refinished them like I had imaged in my head. So I decided I would do one just to make sure they were going to work out. It's amazing how good they cleaned up. Talk about taking trash and turning it into treasure.
Now onto the reason this has been taking me so longto update. I really wanted to make this car unique, and up until this this point I was barely scratching the surface in that area. My friend that has been busting his ass helping me on the weekends and I started shaving the front and rear side markers as well as the large orange blinkers up by the headlights.
While doing so he asked me if we were going to shave anything else and mentioned something about the rear end. Immediately a light bulb turned on and ideas started flowing. We decided to roll the back end under the car and do away with the entire rear bumper except for the smaller upper bumpers. We were both beat as hell so I decided I would mock something up and see what it looked it during the week. I played around a bit and I was completely sold.
The following weekend we started on it but didn't get too far as we were occupied with other things.
We have been trying to use as much metal out of the four extra doors I have. Mostly for the fact that the metal is as old as the car itself which is pretty neat.
I had been absolutely racking my brain because there was no way that the front end of the car would mesh with the back end. After a ton of thought I came up with probably one of the best ideas I have I had. Then came the tough part putting my idea on paper.
Soooo...
I basically took the bumper and cut it in half long ways. Then I shaped the inside of top half to the contours of the fender where it curves forward and tight to under the headlight area.
The the part that is the white paper in the pictures below will be about a 4 inch strip of metal that will be welded in between the 2 halves of the bumper. That will be fiberglassed and molded to the fenders to creating a whole new body panel. I will then get another set of the rear top bumpers and put them on the front to match the back. to finish it off I'm going to make a small air dam to finish it off. I have also been toying with idea of adding in a pair of small fog lights not sure yet though.
I seriously got goose bumps when I took a step back and saw my vision on the front of my car. It completely transformed the entire feel of the front end. So stoked on it. SO STOKED.
Go grab a new pair shorts. I think you will need them after you see this....
