Im going to have to agree here, I really want to go 15x8 all around on mine, I love the look of that just little bit of poke, but I just cant seem to get around the fact that they won't fit under the stock fronts with out a super stretch and a good rolling.

maybe you could lay the myths to rest (or just for my sake of wanting 8s up front) and could test fit those under the stock front before hacking them up from what i gathered is that it wont work at all but im still hoping there is a chance lol

    • Yeah I can see where you guys are coming from, I could see it looking really good if it worked out. I really want to follow through with my plans though, I think MK1 fenders look amazing on 2002's. I'm planning on spacing the wheels out so they fill in the gaps on the new fenders too. I wouldn't want to run super stretched tires, it's just not really my thing. I'll try and mock up the fronts for you guys next time I go out there if I remember so you guys can get an idea of what it would take to make them work. After mocking up the rears, it poked quite a lot back there so the fenders would need to be pulled a bit to make it work. I could imagine the fronts requiring quite a bit of work to make 15x8 et0 fit

Here are a few more pics of how the rear sat when I mocked them up. Keep in mind, I had to space these out ~10mm just so the lug nuts would tighten down. So this is basically 15x8 et-10

      • Lots of great work so far.
I think if you really want to go with the mk1 flares go for it since you're already at that balls deep point in the project.

It's definitely happening. I already have them and I'm almost ready to start on them.

Ehh...why wouldnt the wheel tighten down without the shims? And please tell me you dont consider rolling around like that !? Not enough thread inside the lugnut or what?

Looking at the pics, id say one could achieve a really nice stance with a final offset of +10 or +0 under stock fenders. Not a mad-camber jdm, hellawhatthefuck stance but proper for a classic car that the 02 is.

no way dude, I would never actually roll around like that. It's kind of hard to tell, but the threads on the lug stud actually stop eventually and just become a flat surface, and the mounting point on the Diamond Racing steelies is only 1/8" thick so I had to space them out just so the lug nuts would tighten the wheels down. I only used the washers for mock up purposes and would never run them on the street. I would get legitimate spacers before I did that. I understand you could probably fit these under stock fenders, but not that's not my goal here. I want to weld in the MK1 fenders and make these wheels fit properly with them. Just a personal preference.

                  Good to hear

I gotcha on the MK1 fenders. I was just trying to figure out if they were really necessary to fit the wheels

                  • What are your brake plans? You know of the Volvo brake upgrade? You use e21 hubs/bearing and disks up front with 1985 Volvo 240 Gerling calipers up front. Huge upgrade from stock brakes and super cheap. Youl need to space the calipers out with two washer in between each bolt and the mounting surface on the strut tube. You can run the larger e21 drum brake in the back or convert to disks but disks in the back are not really worth the money unless you track the car and even then its kind of

dude, I honestly haven't even had time to consider my brake setup. I've been way too focused on every other aspect of this build. There are so many big obstacles that I still have to tackle before I can even get this thing in driveable condition. Brakes are something I can always upgrade down the road if I feel the desire to, and I probably will eventually. Taking this build one step at a time, or else I will get overwhelmed. Often times, I will go up to my dad's house to work on the car and have no idea where to even start haha there's so many things that I need to tend to at some point before I can feel that I've completed this build. My main goal right now is to get the engine bay painted, replace various seals/gaskets throughout the engine/tranny, complete the 5-speed swap and get the engine back in the car so I can at least drive it if I really need to. Body work and suspension will follow once I have accomplished that.

Taking baby steps right now, and I feel that progress is so slow, but it will all come around.

well I mean the brakes were in good condition before I started tearing everything down. I drove it 300 miles home the day I bought it and I was actually surprised with them. They didn't seem sketchy to me at all, and my Dad checked them out too and he said they were good to go. This car is strictly a street car, and I will most likely cruise low and slow the whole time haha so performance brakes probably aren't necessary in my situation. I will, however, make sure that the existing brakes are serviced and ready to go before I actually start driving the car.

I completely know how you feel. I tried to do way to much way to quickly, but I was kind of pressed into that by having a limited time in my work space. Smart man. Take your time, slow and steady wins the race and so on.

Yeah I hear you. When I started this project, I kind of had it in my head that I wanted this project to be complete within the next few months. After tearing everything down, I realized how much work was going to be involved and that I probably wouldn't finish it as fast as I wanted to. So I just decided to take my time on it and do everything as good as I can, there's no rush on it. I just can't wait to see the finished product haha.

I'm lucky enough to have a large workspace with no time limit, so I'm very fortunate in that sense. The only downside is that it's a 40 minute drive each way every time I want to work on the car, so I've put in lots of hours/gas money just getting there and back every time. But that's why I bought a Civic in the meantime while I build the BMW, that thing gets 40 mpg's
