Hey people, thanks for the great comments! It gives me my motivation! Next summer you'll see:
-upgraded clutch
-diff bolt kit
-10 psi of boost
-exhaust work, including some sort of blast pipes
-slight bodywork
-headliner redone properl
The car is going in storage next weekend. Now listen to this: during the last 4 winters, I had no car. I just parked that one in my driveway and waited until all the snow melted to start driving it again. This year it won't happen... I just bought this thing for 500 bones:
Its gold, its rusty (suprisingly, I thought Volvos of this era were zinc'd), its slow and most importantly, its rear-wheel drive. But it runs kinda good. I haven't driven regularly in winter since 2007-2008 when I was driving my blue Mk2 Jetta... Hopefully this will not make me **** winter more than I already do. I'll post more of it when I'll clean it up. Plans are very simple:
-basic tuneup (plugs/oil/filters/brake rotors/etc...)
-good cleanup
-winter tires (I found Pirelli Winter Carvings locally for cheap)
-IKEA cutting board mudflaps
-Hella 500's
There is a local navigation rally championship here in MTL, I'll probably enter at least one of the 3 winter rounds with this boat. Should be fun...
I took more pictures of the Volvo. I did a real good cleanup on the interior because it was dirty as hell. I also went to pickup 4 BFG Winter slaloms in great condition for 100$. I also removed the rack. With all that I didn't even have time to clean the outside, let alone change the oil and the plugs...
I ordered front brakes too, they really vibrate when you brake. I also found a used front blinker for 20$.
First, let me show you what's up with my scandinavian Benzo... Lets wind the clocks back to december.
Shortly after the last post, I cleaned up the outside so it didn't look like a 500$ car hehe... I painted the rusty rockers with a thick coat of gravel guard.
Then I polished the headlights and replaced the missing blinker.
100$ winter boots
A Swedish flag sticker to cover the old faded dealer sticker
Even drift band-aids to cover the rust at the bottom of the doors. At some point I found out that all of the door bottoms were made with Bondo and that the PO was pretty good at blending spray paint... I just kept adding band-aids lol.
Snow came, got the heated seats working, proceeded to drift every street corner I came across. Don't have drift pics though. After a month of ownership it looked like this:
Pretty good for 500$...
N/A headlights always suck compared to e-codes. So I got Hella 500's and retrofitted them with 3000K HID's. (PM me if you want more info on this, could be useful on 5.0 E30's hehe)
Anyways, winter went by, did more drifting, managed not to crash into anything. I thought I would be selling the car by now, but I got a job for the summer in another city, about 300 km's away. Thing is, I gotta do about 6 km of gravel roads to go to work each way. Can't do that with the Jetta. So I'm keeping the Volvo for another 4 months. I replaced the brakes, the swaybar endlinks and I threw a K&N on it for fun. That combined with the rusted-out muffler makes it waaaay to loud haha. Not sure it'll stay.
Then I got the Jetta out of storage.
Cranked the boost from 4 psi to 9 psi. Its quick. It backfires when you shift. Torque steer is violent. Typical built turbo car stuff...
I got a nice Clutchnet clutch for it. But the thing is, I'm leaving in a week and I'm planning to take both cars with me. I don't know if I'll be able to do major work on cars where I'll be living, so I have to do everything before friday the 3rd. The new-ish stock clutch does well for now, and I don't do crazy launchs or clutch dumps (to keep the glass 020 transmission alive...), so I won't change the clutch for now. I got more stuff do do on the car anyways (paint touch ups, headliner, brakes, axle boots, etc...)
Today I got cracking on the brakes. Zimmermann discs with Hawk HPS pads
I also found out the garage in which the car was stored probably had floors made out of salt and humidifiers working full time... Everything that could corrode did. Aluminium boost pipes, exhaust, zinc plated hardware, EVERYTHING. I'm not happy with this. Look at my coilovers, which I managed to keep clean for YEARS
Even my super awesome invincible oil pan got hit by the tin worm, even if it was fully painted before.
Makes me sad seriously... Now I'll spend the whole week scrubbing and painting to get that stupid oxydation off everything. I'll never store a car in a damn garage again. 4 winters outside did nothing. Now everything is ruined.
Dang that sucks about the rust. Hopefully the new place will let you work on the car. I love seeing updates!!!
I started cleaning all that corrosion today, its not so bad. Its like rust that you can just lightly scrub and wipe away. I'll post pics during the weekend
This weekend I finished doing the brakes. I also took the driver's side axle out to replace the boot. Empi axles were supposed to be indestructible... The boot lasted like 3 months.
I also took care of most of the corrosion, I sprayed a coat of new paint on the pan, fixed the broken horn (and the old one caught on fire lol), fixed the broken high beams and changed the oil to Shell Rotella (never tried that, a friend told me the detergents in it are good on turbo engines).
Strut mounts are starting to split, went to get new ones this morning. When I tried to remove the old ones, I noticed the threaded part of the shock rod on one of my coils is STRIPPED! I said fuck this, I'll roll half-blown mounts this summer... I don't have time to get new inserts before I leave anyways...
I also noticed I never had a shot of the finished engine. The last one was missing the grille, the downpipe and the shifter. Not like you'll see any of that in this shot, but I took it anyways
I now have a seized rear caliper on the Volvo, gotta do that tomorrow
Hows the eurosport exhaust holding up? Im still debating on stainless steel vs aluminum. Lol i got to figure out what im gonna buy next month. Any new updates? Will there be a cam update any time soon?
