I generally shoot in-action street and BMX-cycling and alot of car-photography - and I'm interested in trying out some filming.

I already have a D50 with a couple of lenses and flashes, so a brand-switch is not an option.

      Thanks.

I couldn't find a more fitting thread for this post, nor did I believe it was nessisary to make a new one for it.
Thats quite a large jump in camera. I shoot a D700 which is essentially a D300 but in FX format and a smidge more advanced. Id go up to a D90 before D300 if i were you. will save you some pennys an is still a phenomenal camera. It allow you to get some more glass which is definately more important than the camera itself. The D90 is not as fast as the D300 will be but it is fast enough for what you shoot.

          • Hey Carter, buying some new lenses for christmas (yay me!) and im looking at buying a 50mm f1.8 and a couple of zooms.
my question is, with the 50mm everybody raves about them but im currently studying photography and my teachers dont really pay mention to them.
what are your thoughts and recomendations on them?

            • The 50 1.8 is a great lens and everyone should have one. I pretty much use mine excessively. Zooms are silly anyway, primes are the way to go.

              • 50 1.8 doesn't get much love from the technically sound because in all honesty it isn't the greatest lens in terms of sharpness or build quality. That being said it is the best bang for your buck and at 1.8f it is extremely fast. Most professionals who use them will tell you that they stay around 4f where the lens is at it's sharpest. I have owned one and I highly recommend it.

As far as zoom lenses are concerned I would say get one and stick with it... Better to spend good money on a good telephoto (70-300 f4L) if you can swing it.

In all honesty I use one lens 18-135 IS (the kit lens with my 7D) it's all I need. Don't get too caught up on lenses.

This. I almost never take my 50 1.4 off of my camera, its a great lens to shoot anything with.

Thanks guys i think im sold on the 50mm, as for the tele i have had my eye on a 70-300
just for some variety cause the 18-55 kit lens is just not cutting it, not really wanting to get into the whole multiple lens thing justa cople to giveme some different varibles. cheers again guys away to ebay i go!

                    • 70-300 isn't worth it IMO, I'd save until you could get a 70-200 f/4L. The upgrade in quality alone makes it worth it.

This was the lens I was referring too, typed 300 instead on 200 on accident.
