I now know the second pair I posted is raw. Just did a sitting hot soak. The amount of dye that was in the tub after was unreal. These are going to have some good honeycombs

The selvedge ones yes. The other I can say that they are. Have the same looks and feel as my 501 stf before wear.

I am not sure if they are sanforized or not but I will treat them as not.

Here is a good place to get info and tips

Heddels is the leading destination for those seeking to understand and find well-made, enduring denim, footwear, and other clothing that improves with wear.

I just starched my 501s as I didnt like the way they were fading, and I washed them 2 to many times being impatient

So I am bumping this thread.

I have been working on my Levi's STF 501s for the past year and they turned out okay, The wiskers and honeycombs are as prominent as I would like them to be which I found out how to fix.

Though heres what I just got. American Eagle Raw and Selvedge denim. Now I know that phrase sounds all sorts of whack but for the price I paid per pair they cant be denied. A whopping 23.99 a pair after coupons and sales(gotta be thrifty)

This pair is both raw and selvedge.

This pair is a light weight pair.

This next pair is just raw but not selvedge

So, I eBay'd myself a pair of Academi Love Japan jeans, and they came in yesterday. First, I have to say that I bought them for the price and size (28/32, not that common). But...

Wow. The fit is incredible. The stiffness of the denim is weird, especially to feel it against my legs since it's less than 'relaxed' fit (no, they're not skinny jeans), but not as unpleasant as some people have reported. Would I prefer to find a set of washed Levi's off the rack for the same price? So far, yes, but these are a nice pair and we'll see how they hold up. Very dark dye, should age nicely if the construction lasts.

I want to take this opportunity though, to point out that selvedge and raw are not the same thing. Although they are often together (selvedge being raw, raw being selvedge). Selvedge is expensive as a result of the manufacturing method being less efficient and less common. Non-selvedge denim could be sold raw. I don't know if this is the case anywhere though.

I wouldn't confuse archaic production methods with good quality though, just as a grain of salt. Example being Levi's, who produce high quality jeans both washed, and untreated selvedge.
I know selvedge =/= raw and raw =/= selvedge. The two just typically go hand in hand. Shit my 511s selvedge are washed, but they are far more rigid than any other pair of washed denim I have ever had.

Would you buy replica wheels because they looked the same and were 1/4 of the price?

This thread is all about raw denim, its not about washed denim. If there were a general denim thread then sure I don't disagree. But that's not what this thread is about.

I own 3 pairs of non-selvedge denim, and I don't like the feel or fit of them nearly as much, as I do my selvedge. There is a lot more to raw denim than if they faded naturally or not, to me that doesn't even matter. Its how they break in and fit to me, and ultimately end up being more comfortable than any other pair of washed denim.

I'm not saying you have to buy raw denim either. Shit if you find a cut that you like at a good price go with it for sure, hell once I found 511s, I didn't buy anything else, and then I jumped at a 50% deal on my selvedge 511s, and from there I never looked back.

And btw you can get Unbranded (which is raw selvedge) for $78, proving you don't need to spend a shit load on good quality denim.
