What actually broke? I can see that it's pretty bent but my subframe looks like that too and it still works.

The whole subframe creased back. One wheel has like 15 degrees of toe out and the other one is straight.

I did the same thing back in august in my jetta. Wrecked my subframe and a whole lot of other parts.

I called the town, they sent me to dept of public works, they sent me to the contracting company and after a few weeks of talking they payed for the damages.

It was a very VERY anoying process to go through but it was kind of their fault. I went back the day after the accident and took video/pictures of cars hitting it and avoiding it during the day (it was at night when I hit it).

If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

Best of luck with the car man

Fuck PA's roads, I deal with that shit constantly around here. My car isn't even low, but when something like that sticks up out of the ground 6" with pavement mounded around it, it's just supposed to be okay.

              Get well soon, Volvo.

I just junked an entire 244 to, sucks I woulda just gave ya the subframe hahaha. I have been thinking about shortening mine and raising it, would fix a lot of the control arm angle issues as well.

                  True, thanks for the thoughts!

My friend actually hit me up today, and said he's got one I can have for free! Stoked, so I'm going to get that after school tomorrow.

its good to know that the towns or contracting companies are at least paying for the damages....im surprised they dont say "deal with it".

op...what are the plans if they wont pay for repair costs.

Like Racoon Goon said, i went to the Bethlehem township borough and since it was a ridiculous pothole in their town they paid for the cost of a new wheel and tire. Since there wasnt any construction i didnt have to go through all those other hoops though. They asked to look at the car and i didnt even raise it rolled up scraping with stretched tires and all and they just laughed haha.

Good luck, id just talk to your local township or ask a cop where to go next ime you see one parked

The contractor is then at fault. You should have gone to the city and they would have gone after the contractor. Adequate warning and signs are required for raised manholes and chambers.

                            Awesome Volvo.
I used to deal with calls all day from residents bitching about raised manholes. I always told them the same thing... you can build a road one of two ways, this way inconveniences you for a year, the other for life... you choose.

All of the watermain, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer needs to be installed before the road goes in, often times telephone, tv, internet cables, gas lines, also have to be placed before surface works can begin. Once everything is installed at the proper elevation, proper fill is brought in and compacted so that asphalt can be laid. When paving asphalt you usually pour ~60% of the total road thickness, wait 6-12 months for the bitumen mixture to cure in all weather conditions, then pave the remaining 40% onto a thick, hardened layer of asphalt.

Now manholes are thick concrete pressure pipes (CPP) all the way down, but at the manhole cover, it's simple brick and mortar on top of the CPP keeping the lid at that elevation. These can be raised either before the final layer of asphalt goes in, or after. If we do it before (the proper way) then the cover is raised to FINAL elevation, painted for warning, and a year later, we pave to the perfect elevation and everything is peachy. If we do it after (the incorrect way, but sometimes residents get the councilor or mayor to chime into the situation, forcing us to do it wrong), then we leave the manholes where they are, wait a year for the base asphalt, pave to final grade, and then finally raise the manhole covers. This is done by cutting into the asphalt around the manhole, raising it, and then filling in the square section that was cut. The problem with this is, patch asphalt work doesn't require a roller or even an experienced crew, so it's always just roughly patched up and then the asphalt settles too much and low and behold... the asphalt around the cover is settling too much and you have a raised manhole cover forever because the city isn't coming back once the project is finished.

So to those who just bitch moan but don't understand WHY things are done the way they're done, read up. This post wasn't meant in an offensive way, just to educate... some of the posts remind me too much of people that used to drive by yelling 'you're ruining our roooaaads!' instead of understanding that without the new sewer main, they'd be floating up shit creek by next year, literally.

^Clearly this man has been on a paving crew before(never reccomend it to anyone), that is the way it's done, not laziness or carelessness involved.
