  • Took the wheels apart today. Wasn't too bad. Found heating the nuts for a minute made it a hell of a lot easier. Didn't break any bolts so I'm happy with that. Also cleaned all the old locktite off the threads with a wire wheel.

Cleaning them up in a little bit. Tires come off tomorrow morning, then it's polishing time. Also got some parts in.

    YAY PICTURES!

Parts, also got my accessory belts in. Just waiting on the pads and timing belt kit:

    One wheel apart:

    Faces:

    Barrels and tires:

Faces could really use some paint, but I don't have the time or money right now. Hopefully next year.

    That's all for now.

I think powdercoating them would hold up better. Plus I don't have access to a shop anymore which kinda sucks. Planning to have them painted next year when I pull them apart again after having them widened.

Anyways, so I did some cleaning:

Cleaned up front wheel. Deleted the "before" pic on accident..

And a before pic of the one rear wheel. I don't know what happened to these wheels, but this shit was not fun to clean:

It's like rust or something. Idk. But after 3 hours of scrubbing with a gray scotch brite pad and using a little brass brush, I got it the best I could:

          And all 4 together:

Pretty happy with the way they turned out, especially since I did them entirely by hand. I think the only way to get the rest of the 'rust' shit off the one wheel would be to media blast the whole wheel.

For now though they are miles better then they were. Also cleaned the faces up really good. I'll just have to wax them and touch up the paint in a few spots.

I'm beat, more updates tomorrow after I get the tires off.

          • Looks great man. You make me want to crank my coils down.

You should do the tiburon rear sway bar. I know it doesn't have anything to do with stance, but it was the best mod that has ever happened to my car.

Already done. 23mm bar. Did that a few summers ago.

Too bad the paint on it didn't hold up for shit...Got to paint that next week.

              • Big difference over the stock coat hanger, huh.

If you need any help with the timing belt or any other DIY things, check elantraxd they have some DIY timing belt guides that are more descriptive than the official Kia/Hyundai beta2 guide.

So glad that you are keeping up on this thread, I missed seeing it for a while.

                • Thanks.

Tried to take my tires off at the shop I used to work at, no go. Dropped them off at another local shop. Hope to go pick them up in a little bit.

Also got some buffing compound, paint stripper, and more sand paper.

My toolbox has turned into a wheel refinishing workshop:

3M compound. Shit was $55 but it takes out 1200 grit scratches. I'll sand to 1500 then use the compounds from there:

Then I'll use this compound after that:

It's not as abrasive, should get them pretty shiny.

                  Then finish with this:

Only thing I forgot to pick up is some blue locktite. I can grab that next week though as I'm sure I wont be ready for that for a bit.

                  • I missed something, I'm sure. But, are you polishing the faces? What colour schemage are you going?

I'm excited to see the outcome, Andy. I really like those wheels.

                      Just the lips.

When I split the wheels apart next year (hopefully 2 will also be wider) I'll deal with the faces then. I want to strip them and send them off to be powder coated. I think I'll stick with a similar color. I think powder coating will hold up better than paint and clear.

                          • Made some progress this afternoon after having a bit of a set-back.

I put the paint stripper on the wheels and it didn't do shit. So I figured the clear would sand off with 400 fairly easy. So I grab some 400 wet and get to work and after sanding, and sanding, and sanding I'm finally getting through in a little spot.

At this point I said fuck it, grabbed the 180 wet and got to work. 180 barely took it off as well, that's when I came to the conclusion I'm pretty sure the wheels were chromed.

                            Here are some pics:

                            Getting started:

Towards the top in this pic is raw aluminum, the bottom I'm pretty sure is chrome:

                            Another:

Finally all the way down to raw aluminum. Took an hour and a half:

So I grabbed some elbow grease:

Did the other front wheel in a little over an hour and got going on the rears. The rear outer lips were gouged from hitting the quarters on large bumps. A lot of it happened to/from SoWo with me, a dudeman, all our shit, and of course tools and alcohol. lol

That came out a lot easier than the chrome did with 180 grit:

Then it started to rain so I picked up, went inside, grabbed some food, and got back at it.

                            Grabbed some more elbow grease:

Also threw on a glove as my fingertips are now raw.

Got the 2 rears done with 180 all around and all the gouges are out. Tomorrow morning I'll get to work on them with 320 and go from there.

                            The 2 rears done:

In the last 2 days I've put 14 hours into the wheels. I'm guessing it'll take close to 40 all said and done.
