Ok, since I decided to post pics of what wheels I have, might as well post pics of how I've been cleaning them up. I've put a lot of work into them so far.
The wheels are Wald Duchatelets. 17x8 +29 and 17x9 +35. 4/5x114.3from the factory, not re-drills.
How I got them:
Its hard to tell but the lips were pretty oxidized and they are fairly dirty.
The one 9" rear looks like it sat in some water or something for a long time. I think VR Wheels did a quick polish job so they could take pics and sell them. It was like this all around the wheel:
Inner barrel:
With the exception of that one, the rest of them were decent.
I spent about 2 hours just scrubbing whatever that shit was off the wheel with a soft bristle brush and some aluminum wheel cleaner. I didn't get the inner barrel perfectly clean, but you can't really see it so I can live with it now.
I'm a pretty OCD person when it comes to my car stuff and I really wanted to split these apart to polish the lips and re-paint the centers, but I just don't have the time and money to do that right now. That'll be my project this winter since I want to hang onto these wheels.
So today I went to Advanced and bought a bunch of shit to get to polishing these. Got the needed sandpaper for wetsanding, polishing compound, and some aluminum polish. Also picked up a Mother Power Cone that goes on the end of a drill. It works really good.
First wheel done:
I taped off the faces to protect the paint, and when I peeled it off, it took a nice chunk of paint with it. It really pissed me off, but I'm going to try and mix some touch up paint since I work at an autobody shop just to get me through until I properly refinish them.
Close up, I was raging when it happened:
I then moved to one of the rears, taped off the face, and got to polishing. The lip was in decent shape before I even started the polishing, so I hit it quick with some 3000 3M trizact to get off any heavy stuff and it turned out pretty good:
After scrubbing the shit outta the one wheel, I managed to scratch the lip up pretty good:
So again, I taped it off:
I then wet sanded with 1000, 1500, 2000, and then 3000. This is the result:
I cleaned up for the night and called it a day. I'll finish the rest either tomorrow or the rest of the week while I'm waiting for the rest of my parts to arrive.
Got my tires at work today. 205/40 Falken 912's all around. The tire machine we have at work isn't made to really do low profile tires, so myself and the other mechanic are going to see if we can do one tomorrow. I've done 45 series tires with it, so I am hoping we can do a 40 series. Otherwise I'll have to take them to another shop and have them do it.
As for the wheels, I'm about 2/3 the way done with this one:
I just have to finish polishing about 1/2 the lip, clean up the face, then wax the entire wheel.
Remember that wheel with all the rusty shit on it? Well, after starting to polish it tonight I found out I have to do a lot more wetsanding to get it even acceptable in my book.
As you can see by the pic, the part closest to the face looks like ass even after wetsanding, so I'm going to have to hit the entire lip with 400 and redo everything all the way up to 3000 again. Not a huge deal, just a bit more work.
I'm shooting to have all my wheels done and the tires mounted by the end of the week. This way when my lug studs, lug nuts, and spacers get here, its just a matter of putting all that stuff on and throwing on the wheels.
Got one of my tires on today at work. I originally just brought 1 wheel to try and match where the paint chipped off, but decided I might as well put on a tire and balance it while its there, so I did.
205/40 Falken 912 on an 8" wheel:
Then I threw another coat of wax on that wheel so its completely done:
I was able to get some paint that matched the chipped spot pretty close, so it'll work for now until I do a complete refinish over winter:
I got the other front wheel polished, put on 2 coats of wax, and put another coat of wax on the other 9" rear wheel that's done, so the only wheel I need to finish is the one that needs more wetsanding. I have all the paper I need, but I forgot it at work. That'll be tomorrow nights project.
Also got the shipping confirmation for my lug studs and lug nuts. Nothing for the spacers though, damn PayPal waiting to clear I think. I think I'll have the studs by Friday, so this weekend I'm going to try and get them all pressed into the hubs.
Yesterday I got one of my rear tires mounted and I'm really digging the stretch:
Then I came home to my lug studs and lug nuts from Summit Racing. I was really impressed with how fast I got the stuff since I ordered it all Saturday afternoon.
I spent last night and tonight wetsanding that one wheel that needed a lot of work. I was moving along at a really good pace last night, but I ran out of 1000 grit paper and had to quit for the evening. I got some more paper today at work along with a few rubber soft blocks and got to sanding. Ended up going, 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, and finally 3000. I couldn't find 800 at any local parts stores, so I just had to sand a little longer with 1000.
What used to look like this:
Now looks like this:
And the complete wheel for shits and giggles:
Tomorrow I will head for battle and glory and polish the lip so I can throw the tire on Saturday morning.
And here are the other 3 wheels that are totally done:
Pretty sure I'll be heading out to Albany Sunday afternoon to meet up with Ollie and get his fender roller. I think by early next week I'll have my spacers (they left Cali today) and I can get everything dialed and get an alignment.
So other than installing my lug studs this weekend, I'm pretty damn close to being done. feelsgoodman.jpg
Got home today to find my spacers came in the mail.
I went out to test fit my wheels with tires. Turns out the 5mm I thought I would need to clear my coilover bodies in the rear were too small. So I stacked the and 10mm is perfect. Going to order the 10mm ones tonight. I then threw on a 5mm for the front and mounted them up. I'll let the pics do the talking:
Front:
Rear:
et awesome:
So the final specs will be:
17x8 et +24 front Falken 912 205/40
17x9 et +25 rear Falken 912 205/40
Installing my extended lug studs tomorrow and getting a fender roller this weekend. I'm actually just about to head out and finish polishing my last wheel.
