  • Der Panzer - E28 Build

Copied and pasted from my thread on MyE28.

I got the car in September of 2007:

It looked alright, but it was a mechanical mess; broken water pump, blown rear shocks, shot pitman arms, front strut mounts, electrical nightmares, and a ton of other things I'm forgetting.

The interior wasn't bad, but it had cheap-ass Sony X-Plod speakers in the front that I ripped out and put blown Pioneers in just for the decent grills. It also had a shift knob that looked like a red Christmas tree ornament. I pulled that off to find that my shift lever was broken. I did, however, manage to clean the interior up fairly well:

Faded as it was, it looked OK.

    ~February 2008:
After looking around for wheels, and (luckily) not getting the ASA AR2s I wanted, I got a set of E36 style 42s...yeah.

    Better than the 18s, kinda.

Finally, I got some wheels that actually fit the car, and I started feeling very good about the potential it has.

    As of July 2009:
    -Shadowline trim
    -Staggered style 32s
-Single 2.5" Magnaflow cat-back exhaust with custom tip
    -M Tech 1 steering wheel (E30 diameter)
-Rebuilt shift linkage with E39 530i shift rod
    -Black E30 sport seats
-Black cloth door panels & pulls
-Center console for cars with manual seats
    -Tons of deferred/normal maintenance done
-JVC KDR600 head unit with Pioneer speakers & new wiring

    As of August 10th 2009:
-Hartge Spoiler and modified euro turns

    The tear-down begins:

Turns were modified (guest starring El Swordorito):

    Holes were cut:

US bumpers helped a car look better for once:

    Initial mounting:

    More Progress!

    August 13th 2009:

    -Operation Olive Begins

    I disassembled the front end

You can't see it, but I'm wearing an Awesome Possum shirt...word.

I taped and sanded (though not pictured - trust me, it wasn't pretty)

    Then things got interesting:

    Der Panzer!

Next up - H&R/Bilstein Sport install

    August 18th 2009 -

I got the front suspension done about an hour ago. I started last night, but thanks to the PO and his 18x9 et20s and tires that were too big, my strut housing were bent, thus pinching the shocks in the housing and not allowing the Billie Sports in. With some help from a small mallet, a tube that just barely fit into the housing, and some wood blocks as an operating table, I got the damned things in.

    Pictures:

The driveway is on a slight slant, but it's a wee bit high for me in the front. I guess I'll end up cutting half a coil later on. I'm happy with it for now.

Rear tuck, as slight as it may be, is nice!

    And one just because -

    August 29th 2009

Here are a couple of pictures from a Euro/Import meet that I got started up here in Palmdale -

Thanks to Dabba on Bimmerforums for the pictures. I'll link to the thread when more are posted.

As of these pictures, the fogs, front bumper, and front suspension have been installed.

    October 5 2009

A lot of school meant less time with the car.
I painted the doors and trunk, then rolled like that for a bit.

    December 9 2009

Finally, it started to look like a completed concept. Just needed some fine-tuning.

    As of December 2009:

    - IE Urethane Subframe Bushings

    - Lots More Maintenance! Yay...

    March 2nd 2010

Had a bit of a lull with the car. Too much going on.
Finally, I cut just over a coil off of the front springs, put some 215/45s on the front wheels, some 235/45s on the rears, 20mm spacers up front, and 15mm spacers out back. Then I painted the style 32s Ivory White... Krylon should sponsor me.

I also painted my front bumper and my girlfriend got me a killer Euro plate.

    March 9th 2010

Threw on a friend's Throwing Stars mostly to see what it would look like and because they had 205/45s on them, which is what I wanted to run up front.

    May 22nd 2010

    Decided I wanted to do some last-minute work for Bimmerfest;

    - Cut another half-coil off of the front
    - Set rear suspension to its lowest setting
    - Had 205/45s installed up front, and 215/45s installed out back
    - Went to 20mm spacers all around (et6 rear, et0 front)

So here's how it sits. More to come, I promise.

              Looks sick man.

Question: what did you do as far as prep work after any finishing work on the paint?? also what krylon paint did you use and did you get a wide spray tip thing...

              thanks

I sanded the car with 400 grit, pulled as many panels as I could, hung them, and sprayed alternating wide/tall left-to-right/up-and-down with Krylon Satin Italian Olive. It lasted quite a while, but now it's showing its age. No biggie, it's less than a year away from paint.

update? im trying to find a set of staggered 18" style 32s for my 535iS. and it took for ever to find another e28 running them.

really hot. lets see that fitment. i'll assume you had to roll your inner fenders?

I should have my new front end painted by tomorrow night. I'll post some crappy phone pics then, haha.

I'm actually running 17" style 32s. I rolled the crap out of my rear fenders - now I'm going to cut them. My fitment is straight booty right now, though: No spacers up front, and only 15mm in the rear. No cash = no flush.

If I get the job I'm trying for right now, big things will be happening, and fast.

                        So, I yanked the front end apart for the billionth time;

                        Then I ended up with this;

It'd look better if my plate filler and Euro plate hadn't flown off of the car a few days ago... Oh well, I'm digging the new look.

Keep the Gottis, please. A bit more low, a little less tire, and some small spacers would make that car OG as hell.

As for the comment on the valance: I really liked the Hartge spoiler, but since it's fiberglass and I already smacked it a couple of times, it had to go. After the suspension settled post-Bimmerfest, it was 1.75" off the ground - not good for a fiberglass part on a DD. I either had to sell it and move on, or lose all of the money I had into it. I managed to work out a deal that got me the valance and come out on top cash-wise. Win-win in my book.
