  • Porsche 944 rework

I have always wanted a 944. I bought a low milage very clean car just a little under a year ago. The plan was to mod it slowly as I focus on my Audi build...

I started by drilling the front bumper shocks so that it could be pushed in closer to flush and threw a set of 30mm spacers in the rear.

The cars use a torsion bar system in the rear, so lowering it without a fight is a chore. Simply adjusting the bars is not a very fun job, and results in a saggy soft ride. Mine is an early version of the car, which was produced before suspension updates. This means there are no rear coilover options on the market. Custom fabricated brackets welded to the trailing arms and a set of universal qa1 coilovers were my method to make it happen.

I have been happy with the ride and height. I started looking for the perfect set of wheels. Something that matched the era of the car. I found a set, but the fitment was far from right. I have been fighting to find wheel halves that fit the centers, but haven't had any luck. I finally decided to have a custom set made. I'm still waiting for that to happen. I'll post them once they show up.

    This happened last week.

Swapping a pan out in these things is a huge pain in the ass. The motor wasn't damaged at all, but I am sick of how under powered it is. Since the pan swap requires nearly the entire front end to be disassembled and motor to nearly be removed to swap it, I decided to do something a little different. I removed the motor completely and will not put it back in.

I have decided to swap a VW 16vT in. I started on adapting the Vw motor to the Porsche drivetrain yesterday, and should have it mounted by this weekend. I will post picture of how once it's in.

Seems like there is a flood of new 944 owners that create threads with very short and meaningful titles.

If this ends half audi good, it will be really good.

        Subscribing.

Today marks one week since the engine was removed.

This is an old Corrado G60 o2a transmission I have been stashing for years. I disassembled it for it's bellhousing.

Once the case was split, I sawed off the differential portion of the case. Notice the flat machined portion of the bellhousing.

The first plate is 3/8" thick. It was cut to match the perimeter of the of the machined surface of the case. The smaller square is a little larger than the torque tubes flange. It is 1/2". These two plates work as an adapter and a spacer. These two thicknesses allow the Porsche input shaft to VW clutch and crank shafts's pilot bearing.

The pan been to be cut to fit over the cross member. It had been cleaned up more since this picture. I will do more work to it to increase is capacity once I figure out how much room I have to work with.

Then dropped it in. It's a tight fit from the top to bottom, but will work just fine.

Next up is to sort out the engine mounts, and build the turbo manifold. The parts are on their way.

It is a PTE 5862cea a.r.82. The a.r. is a little too big. I orginally bought this turbo for a 5 cylinder, so I will probably swap out the hot side once I get it running. The motor is built with forged parts, so I am going to shoot for a mild 400whp tune. I shouldn't get bored for a little while at that level. It does have plenty more to give though.

There have been a few variations of this swap. Other have used the 1.8t 20v motor. Most other builds have been poorly documented or just stopped being built. That leave me with a lot of guess work to do to make this happen. I need the car back sooner than later, so will be trying to keep a fast pace, and hope that it goes smoothly.

            Thanks for following!

It's been a while, and I have made some progress.

              Rear engine mount.

              The front side

              The exhaust parts.

Turbo on it's temporary mount, in its final rating place.

Building a collector. I used sch.40 mild steel.

              Building

              Action shot

              Intake manifold parts

              Assembly

I will be rewiring the entire car and painting the entire interior the new color of the car. I will end up doing some body work and respray everything. I'm working a lot right now, but will get back to progress as soon as I have some time to spare.

I love this. I always thought the 944 could use a more lively powerplant and this should address that more than nicely. Also it's nice seeing full size pictures instead of following this on instagram haha.

                              Epic work so far!

Solid engine mounts are gonna make this vibrate like a bi-atch when it's running haha .
