1988 Porsche 944 NA 8v, bought as automatic with 112k on it.
The blue is pretty rare, at least in the fact that I have never seen one. This is Azurite Blue, and tan leather.

I picked it up looking like this, but not running well.. the PO had done some...work But the price was right at $2000,
the body was mint, in a color I reaally liked, the interior was great except the driver's seat,
and I'll probably swap them out anyway. Only problem was the automatic. Driving the car was great fun, but soulless at the
same time. I need to row my own.

The engine condition wasnt a big deal to me, since I was going to go through it anyway,
but I checked CL to see what was out there. Started talking to a guy about a motor that sounded like a good
setup and ended up that it was still in the car. The car was also a 5 speed, and same year as mine.
$1300 later and it was in my driveway, including the $250 I paid a friend to go get it in NC because I had to work.

Within a week I had it reduced to this. I kept every single thing that would unbolt, unscrew or unplug (marked for reference)
and scrapped the body. It's a shame the PO painted it yellow. I would have loved it in the OEM color, Nougat Metallic.

Now I had every single nut, bolt and wire, strong engine, and transmission, plus everything else from a manual transmission 944
    of the same year.
This was going perfectly. Started ordering parts to refresh the engine before installing it, a few extras here and there. Bought
a brand new Schnell short shift kit and Weltmeister throttle rotor. Picked up all new clutch master and slave cylinders, victor reinz
headgasket kit, and balance shaft seals. Scored a deal on a MSDS header, aluminum underdrive pulleys, and a BremTek flywheel off a retired
championship winning race 944. All these went on the pile.

Oh almost forgot. The reason I went looking for a 944 in the first place. I scored a set of 17/8.5+42, 17/10+45 OZ 2pc Velas.
I really like the look of the wheels, I got them super cheap, and off I went Porsche hunting.. I really wanted a 964 (who doesn't) but had always admired the 944.

I found a set of Falken tires with good tread on CL, ze-912s 235/45/17 all around and so the car went from this

    to this..still 100% stock suspension

Cruised around like that for a bit on the weekends, even with a leaking engine and one nearly dead cylinder it was still a nice driver. Then.. the headgasket in my
daily driver 318ti pops. Instantly the 944 gets off the bench and turned into a daily star til the BMW was revived.

That lasted 3 weeks. or should I say the 944 engine lasted 3 weeks.

Thankfully the Ti was a few bolts from being commuter friendly again.

The 944 has been in the driveway since. I'm in the (slow) process of collecting the rest of the bearings and seals to complete the rebuild of the engine out of the
yellow car. The head is off and will be shaved about .020" for a nice little bump in power.

Even if you aren't working on a car though..it is possible to change it.... lucked into a deal with a local guy that had a set of Gotti j55a on CL. Hooked up the deal and a
straight across trade put me in possession of these babies. Gotti j55a 16/8 +26, 16/9 +16. With the good Porsche caps. Wheels came off a 930 cab.

I liked the OZs..but even with a good bump in power, the NA 944 needs all it can get and the 17s were heavy. These Gottis weigh in at just over 16# and look more period correct
to me.. the OZ were made in 99, I'm guessing these were built in the 80s... so it's perfect. Plans are to polish the lips, gold or chrome bolts and body color Azure Blue centers.
True 80s style..just like my old ass.. lol

I have more pics of the interior and the engine build on my other computer. I'll add later..

Future plans are to locate some coilovers that don't break the bank.. maybe some m030 Konis and refurb them.

I want to find some OEM rocker sill extensions (side skirts) also and do a full repaint. The 25yr old paint looks great, but on the edges you can see where the PO buffed the bejesus out of it. Maybe grab an S2 or Turbo rear valance also, and I'm shaving the front and rear bumperettes.

Interior will be brought back up with either recovers on the stock seats, or some 964, or 986 Boxster seats.. fab where necessary.

exhaust will be 2.5" through a resonator and Borla muffler. 2.5" cat to start.. then maybe a test pipe to try out. I like a new smooth rip to an exhaust, not raspy or buzzy.

going to mess with the headlights and design a low-rise dual projector. not fond of the bugeyes.. 911 yes, 944 no.

Please discuss. Don't be shy, I build my cars for me anyway.

Hell yeah, so glad you made a thread on this. I didn't know you had the Gotti's, those are some of my favorite wheels! They'll look awesome on that body style, much better than the OZ's in my opinion.

I just literally scored them yesterday. Had the deal brewing for a week, but since the guy was in Charleston we couldn't meet up. I kept it under wraps because I didn't want to jinx it. He already said that a guy down there with a Porsche engine in a VW bus was begging the hell out of him..and just waiting for our deal to fail. no dice. mine

That sounds like a very cool project though...

inlaws are in town and sleeping on the hideabed so no TV for me..may as well keep going

Just uploaded a few more pics.

The front doorpanels have some custom sound pods in them. Someone loved this car for sure. Can't wait to get a good component set and put in here

Pulling the rear panels I discovered some heavy duty speaker cable, so apparently there may have been an amp at one time. Always been older owners,
so was probably done well.. I'll be stripping the car to the bone for the swap to manual and a few other things so if it wasn't done right before, it will be now. Currently has a Pioneer deck in it. Probably will swap to a new Blaupunkt..since the car came delivered with one new, and this is a restore/update.

Few more underhood shots. The PO did take great care of the car, and it was garage kept. He just wasnt the greatest wrench turner apparently.

I have done literally nothing under this hood (except blow oil all over the place) It was all the PO. The nice red intake mani will have to go though, the auto and manual ones are different. mine will be nice and clean too though.

Few shots of the donor engine in teardown phases, learning a lot here. It is very empowering in a long term involved build to be able to tear apart an identical car
with no regard to putting it back together. Helps you answer all the questions of how something comes apart? What's behind here? etc

This engine will be fully rebuilt except the rings.. the cylinder bores have a special coating, and since the engine tested 175-180 psi across all 4 when ice cold, that's good enough for me. The 88 NA pistons have a bit of a compression bump too, so combined with the head shave it should get me about 10.6:1. The car will never be "fast" but
            it won't slouch either.

Here is a very nice, perfect running condition 113k miles boat anchor. I'm sure it's needed by someone..hit me up. I have ALL automatic transmission parts avavilable. Silky smooth shifting and no leaks.

random..here's the build codes for the car

I did score some goodies to keep from the parts car, the OEM 30mm steering wheel spacer for instance. Also a spare hatch in case mine delams, plus a few other things. Sold the cookies and Coco cloth script seats plus a few other things and recouped half my money already. Not far to go until the car is paying me back and the fun continues.

small update. found the pics tearing down the head.

This tool repaid the $153.00 I paid for it on the MAC Tools truck over 10 yrs ago..the first time I used it. Awesome.

unfortunately no other news for now. got plenty to do but I have been sick and it's cold out.

So no real work on the car recently, but that hasn't stopped me from collecting more parts.

Currently this is what I see behind the wheel.

But I'm about to pick this up, pretty much mint condition and at a really good price from a 51k mile car.

But then I started poking around the garage, and found this. From the donor car that I pulled the engine,
transmission and all the 5 speed swap parts from. The wheel is not good condition at all, but it has the
optional 30mm spacer on the back. This was even listed on the option card in the trunk. And the AGLA leather
shift boot. Now they are a chocolate brown, and my interior is black and tan, but I'm considering using at least the
shift boot in my car. It would be a way to preserve a little more of the soul of the donor car. And I just saw this
same boot and knob on ebay the other day for $140.

                some other goodies too
                factory tool kit

                retracting hatch cover

                sunroof bag

and a set of OEM wheel locks..no pictures.

                more to come

thinking about fabbing this onto the 944, to avoid the issues with the factory oil cooler seals going out and taking the rod bearings with it.

                  Fluidyne, -8 AN in/out 11" wide x 4" high x 2" thick. It's actually a retired NASCAR part I bought cheap off Ebay
a few years ago. Been hanging in the garage since I got it.

just sold my auto transmission so I should be able to finish the engine rebuild now

                      me too man thanks.

tomorrow I'm going to try and slam out some work on my other 318ti so I can sell it..then it's Porsche time

                      anyways...
today was the first over freezing temps in a while and everything was melting. it hit almost 60* here so i cleaned off the 944 by throwing snowballs off the wing at my son across the yard, and we gave her a wash, blow dry and a rub down.

The weather sucked on Saturday with off and on rain, so the ti didn't get any work. I hungout in the Porsche instead.

Good thing too..my engine parts that I stored in the car had leaked thru the dropcloth I put down and I had oil soaking into my backseat

On a more positive note I found another custom touch I wasn't aware of before..rear speaker pods to match the ones on the doors. Cant wait to get some good components in there and crank it while ripping thru some turns

More buying stuff that doesn't make the car run...but it's so damn cool I couldn't pass it up. Vintage Dino steering wheel that was pulled decades ago from an early 914 and set on a shelf. It's in great shape, very few nicks, and the proper amount of patina to glorify it's age.

And as of today my other items are on the way too..looks like I'll have 3 oem steering wheels to sell and offset this build...keeping the Dino, in fact it may change my whole idea of what I want to do in the interior..embrace the woodgrain? Maybe..

Scouring the net to find some low....
