Is there any reason that the uk plate is still there other than to cover up the nastiness/holes behind it?
The US plate is actually mounted to the UK plate rather than being mounted to the car itself. That's the way the previous owner had attached it and I saw no reason to change it and drill any additional holes in the car.
It's the original plate from the car's time over in the UK and it fills out the plate recess nicely. The plate recess would look rather awkward all empty with a tiny US plate in the center.
Rust is never fun, it may get easier with practice but it's never enjoyable.
Do you plan on welding the panels in yourself?
Yeah, that's the plan. I'm just knocking out the rust on the undercarriage where it's at its worst. I'll deal with the minor rust hidden on the body a little ways down the road. The Mini is mostly just spot welded seams so it's a bit easier to fix than standard cars.

I dont know anything about us plate requirements but what about getting a uk style metal plate made up rather than the us one but with the required details of the us plate?
Or you could viynl the recess matt black to take away how big the space is?
The likes of in the uk if there was an issue with a plate recess being too small on say an import then we could run a motorbike style plate but with the right font and sized lettering

Or go all out and redo the recess?
Unfortunately that's not legal in the US. Our plates can't be altered.
I like it as it is. It looks solid with the UK plate under there....might get one in a better color scheme for the period. The Italian Innocentis had a more square recess but it was unattractive.
Should get an old style uk black and silver plate then like the one pictured but the long one like whats on it? only thing is if its a P plate then it technically wouldnt have had the black/silver plate, but imo it would look 100% better if your solid on keeping one there

Yeah, that's the color combo I was looking to source. I think it'd look much better and I'll be backdating the styling a bit so it shouldn't look too out of place despite being technically incorrect.
