  • My Bagged MINI Cooper build thread

    Hello, everyone.

I have introduced myself on the introduction section of the forums, but thought it would be a good time to start an official build thread.

A little bit about the car-
Purchased it (Minis are ugly stock, I'll be the first to admit it) December 22nd 2010.

    First day.

Started modding a little... exhaust, intake, blackout chrome were the first things I did.

Oh my god....... this wheel gap. How did I go so long with it like this???

    Then came lowering springs...

Still a ton of wheel gap.

(No door ding zones make me happy... don't worry- I'm a good parker..... )

Then I retrofitted my headlights... put projectors in, painted housing black, and body color shroud...

    Coilovers, 16mm spacers.

    2.6" off the ground

I bought some BBS Style 5's, had them redrilled, etc.

Had a little too much fun being stage 3. Clutch fried at 15,000 miles.

    His and hers (girlfriend's golf)

Had my wheels powercoated all white (looks familiar doesn't it? )

Then.... my BC's broke. That was fun.

The car has been sitting for a month and a half on jack stands. Kind of tired of dealing with my coilovers constantly breaking, so I went with something that breaks even more...

    Air ride!

I ended up blowing a bag after .5 miles on my first test ride because the strut slipped through the knuckle.

    So I fixed it.

Welded the lower mount as well as the swaybar endlink mount onto the new strut from my stockers. I also welded a couple parts around the strut so even if that mount fails, the strut won't fall through again. Probably not necessary, but the peace of mind is nice.

Finished up the center caps. (These were stolen 12 hours later at a car meet )

And that's how she sits! New wheels are in the near future. Thanks for reading so far! I will keep it updated as I go.

I dig it! I think it would a whole lot cleaner without the stripes, just my $0.02.

Looks amazing man. I just bagged a mini not too long ago. Did you have the knuckles up front machined to fit mk4 struts? Or did you come up with something better?

Thanks! You know, it's funny. People always comment on the stripes online, but I have never once gotten that comment from anyone in person or at shows, etc. Maybe people are just more honest online? Anyways, I have been seriously considering taking them off for a cleaner look.

Oh yeah? Was it your MINI or someone you did it for? I give you props either way, and especially if you did it for a friend- it was not a fun install! I probably have 15+ hours into the entire install, and probably 10 of those just shaving out those knuckles. Apparently bag riders is coming out with a pretty nice set up that is plug and play for MINIs with dampening in the front and camber plates... which would definitely speed up the install.

I appreciate it. It's kind of a love/**** with the contrast of the white wheels for a lot of people. With some people that's all they can comment on while others rant on about how horrible it is! I think that it's such a goofy car already so it takes well to the "pop" of the white wheels.

Thanks Rali! I can't even begin to say how great you guys have been through helping me with everything.

Oh man you wouldn't even believe it. I actually had to get the car towed home the other day (thankfully it was after a 200 mile road trip and things just so happened to go wrong when I was only about 5 miles from my house) when my rear air line attachment snapped off the strut. Did a little adjusting of the rears and it won't happen again. Air ride is so uncommon on these cars that it really becomes trial and error, and fixing things that could go wrong. So I'm hoping that even though I'm running in to all these problems now, it just means I won't have them in the future!

Nope, did it for a friend free of charge haha and no, it was not at all fun. We finally gave up and sent the damn things to a machine shop after I killed about three carbide bits. I heard about the struts via email from bag riders and we were going to help out with the development on those, but the car was sold before we got the chance to. Either way they should be a really killer setup.

That looks pretty damn good even though its a Mini. What projectors did you use for your retro? MH1?
