I didn't read the whole thread but there's something that might help you (but it will cost you money).
Your top mounts are the stock ones or aftermarket?
I ordered camber adjustable top mounts for my car and they're shorter than the stock ones.
So I had to set the coil a couple threads higher to get the same height.
It may help you to clear another half inch or so.
Other than that, I'm useless.
Great car!

Worked on the fenders, first cleaned them out and got rid of some underbody coat that the cavities were filled up with.

Discovered some slight rust.
The fenders are built out of two sheets, the part that connects to the A-pillar is a seperate, welded in piece. Karmann then filled the cavities between the two pieces up with underbody coat, so that no dirt could pile up there.
Sadly due to the porous nature of the material, the coat can sometimes work like a sponge, which seemed to have happened on one of the fenders.

It's not really much rust, but I rather wanna get it fixed, gonna take the fenders apart, clean them, weld them back together, have them rolled and adjusted, etc.etc.etc.
Will take a tad bit longer than I expected at first.
To get the work done though, I had to order some tools and material. While I had some free time now, I decided to testfit the coilovers once again. with the fenders being off the car I got a better look at all the suspension parts, so that I could check clearances and other things.

Fits like a glove!

Sadly the KW shock housing still is way too long.

During the past months I did some research though, to find out which coilovers have the most short shock housings:
Gepfeffert KW V1/V2: 33cm
Gepfeffert KW V3: 29cm
AH Exclusive H&R 150mm: 27cm
AH Exclusive H&R 200mm: 22cm
The V1/V2 are based on the normal KW V1 which I already own, so these are off the table. I could now go for the V3 or one of the H&Rs... we'll see what I'll end up with.

More work done today.

Fenders removed, right one was damaged, plus I still have the fenders from my '86 16V which came without the indicators and the hole for the antenna.
This way I also was able to have a closer look at the clearances with the car sitting on the ground.

Good news everybody!
There's plenty of space in any direction, no way the tire will touch the inner wheel house, I'm safe there.
Bad news for the driveshaft though, barely could fit my pinky between the driveshaft and the frame... so yes. gotta notch that for sure, too.
Also gotta make some room for the wishbone and other things, but I already knew that.
Gonna recheck the clearance between the strut and the wheel with the coilover strut tomorrow, might be a bit tight.
Then it's time to get the new fenders prepared and in place. Which is awesome, cause this is the last thing I gotta do with the car sitting on its own axles.
After this I'll build a rollable support frame on which the Scirocco will sit so I can do all the necessary welding and get it prepared for paint.

@ Pipser
Found them on eBay UK... they are from a polish shop though.
I run their uniball top mounts in my MKIII, too and they work great
@ Topic
No progress on the Scirocco really... started work on the fenders, but then got busy with other stuff.
This weekend we painted the floor in our shed, so with the Scirocco sitting outside, I took the oppertunity and took a shot from behind...

...I like that ass already, but it needs more low.

Dashboard was damaged, plus I need to use a differen one anyway, as I'll put the A/C from the 16V donor Scirocco back in.
Same with the door panels, gotta use the ones from the donor car as they were made for powered windows and mirrors.
I also got a set of OEM Scirocco Recaro seats sitting in my cellar that I'll use.
Gonna get the seats and door panels all remade with black leather.
Also gonna install a wee bit of audio. 8" Sub underneath the left holder for the parcel shelf, small amp next to the spare wheel and a 2-way front system.
That's the rough plan for now... flocked dashboard is also on the list, but that's all up to be decided later
