I think Burroughs said a lot of what I already said, but hey, two is better than one (shout out to boys like girls holler), and its his site, so i suppose he can do as he wishes :P

I think you understand what we are saying though. Replies like this "as for taking it to the show being a waste of time, what else are we going to be doing at night in burlington, and honestly it will not be the worst car there, not by a long shot" are just an excuse. what should you be doing? Working on the car, not showing it off in its raggedy state. Again, its about being proud of your work. If I had done the work that you have done thus far I wouldnt show ANYONE... but again, thats just me, I dont consider my standards to be too high though. Im going to stop because if you havent gotten what Ive been trying to say by now then you probably wont. And again, im not ****** (again that is h-a-t-i-n-g, I dont swear...), I have done soooo many terrible things to cars that I cannot judge haha

    Keep going

well thanks for all the concerns with doing stuff right, i completely agree with you on the quality of work thing, and some stuff will be done legit, but it will never end up restored, if we get petter at welding it will probably end up like the 510 build on here "rusty's Japanese cousin" hopefully when we are ready we will just buy another one (i know of plenty of cheap ones) and start over.

as for taking it to the show being a waste of time, what else are we going to be doing at night in burlington, and honestly it will not be the worst car there, not by a long shot

also Burroughs, i appreciate some positivity, the vw you posted in rusty's build thread is the main reason i got into vw, and that is what brought me into cars, so it is nice to actually get legit insight out of you here

now onto the videos and some updates kinda
click to watch the video, once again should have used youtube

we went ahead and painted the hood black, this picture is the first coat, we did a 2nd of the whole hood but it was dark, today were gonna sand then do one last coat

    bleeding the brakes
i actually really like the way that the floors look

    driving picture

today we are going to work out a better way of latching the trunk, because the current latch is a piece of crap and needs to be kicked to get it to open, and then is impossible to close

we will hopefully find a new air cleaner, and make an adapter to make it fit or small carb

get the hood finished and back on, then have some time to enjoy the car

We're using this car to try things and learn from mistakes we make. For instance I am learning how to weld. Today I did my first caliper install and completely rewired the car (for the fourth time.) Each time I've gotten better. And although cutting springs isn't the smartest thing to do, I learned on this car how to do it the best way. Which I then translated to my E28 which sits perfectly.

To be honest getting on the road today was quite an accomplishment and I'm very happy.
I understand where you are coming from and I want to start by saying I want this post to come off positively - I'm only posting up in hopes of helping you grow as a car enthusiast and builder.

You (and the OP... I'm not sure who's car it is and who's doing the work, but you're taking some credit here, so take this as directed at both of you.) need to slow down and start doing work you can take pride in.

We all start somewhere, trust me, I know that quite well. It's great to see your passion lead you into diving in head first in to a project; frankly, you're further along than I was my first time around. I bought an un-roadworthy car with the plans of bringing it back to life, and it never made it out of the driveway. I wound up giving it away.

But with that said, there's only so much credit to be given for the work in this thread. I can't help but feel like everything on this car was done by a couple of meth-heads in a 2-hour stint for reality TV.

Take your time. Slow down. Think your way through a problem and then achieve it. Your solution to everything thus far has been nothing but humorous at best. I know you guys have some ingenuity in you, and you certainly have the drive and motivation to make something happen.

Take that inspiration and spirit and turn it in to something you can take pride in. We all cut corners, and we are all learning as we go, so don't mistake this for a post saying "do it perfect." You guys are just starting out, just like everyone else has.

Things as simple as your switch board:

Just take the time to make the holes straight. Hard work is in the details. I could go on and on about everything done to the car, but I don't think there's a need to do that.
In my eyes, this car isn't worth touching with a 10-foot pole... but if it is something worth tinkering with and learning on to you guys, by all means do so.

But do things you'll learn from. Poor work is one thing - you'll learn from it. But half-assing like everything so far won't teach you anything.

I love these detailed posts, keep them up.

No car is a lost cause, but when the car is in such bad shape and you don't have the time to do the things you really want to do, it is really hard to do things the "right way".

Right now my daily driver is completely apart, and ive spent probably 40 hours in the past week on rust repair. It sucks, believe me, I know, but it has to be done before I can mess with my stance, and making the car how I really want it to be.

Im not ****** on your car, because its yours and you should be allowed to make it your own, whatever that means. I realize that a lot of the things that are wrong with this car are because they were your first attempt at something, and you didnt know what you were doing. Thats fine, my last car was like that. I broke sooo much stuff on it haha, I made soooo many things far worse before they got any better.

Anyway, this post isnt about me. As I said, this is your car and im not going to **** on it. All im saying (and I think most people will agree with me, or have already agreed with me, on this) is use common sense, actually fix things instead of doing something that is temporary. Make this car something you can be proud of. I understand its pretty far gone, that most people would have junked it anyway so it doesnt really matter (I have a 71 vw squareback that is close to the same condition, so I understand that as well), but please, make it something that your proud to show to other people. Do actual work on this car, research things before you attempt them. It doesnt cost a fortune to do things right either, I have basically no budget for my cars and I make it work. Its possible. Its not about making the car perfect, or doing it how other people tell you to do it or exactly how they did it, as long as your proud of it that is what matters. I guess all im saying is make the car something your proud of, do work that you are proud of. If your proud of what you have done so far or what this car is right now then I dont know what to say, and all of this may have just been for a lost cause. But thats really all I have to say, sorry if this was really long winded, but I have nothing else to do on vacation right now If everything that I said was just baloney then im sorry, just take it as some weird guy raging on the internet. But I hope this does make sense, and that I know you I want your car to be awesome just like you do.

    Keep going

Though I like the car, I completely agree with the above. Best of luck! Definitely has potential to be a very cool car.

    Here's today's update!

We had an extremely busy day. We got up reasonably early for some college kids (12) and got to work.

First up I threw on a new fuel filter. The old one as seen above was ruined. The car is running a little better now. But it still needs plugs and an oil change.

Then Thomas spent about an hour getting the calipers lined up and the lines hooked up. They were a bitch. I finally knocked the last pad retaining pin in. (say the 10 times fast) and we got them bled.

In between the install and the bleeding we went to a friend's house and got his 328isish runningish. It's in rough shape. All it needed was a battery and some gas and it was good to go.

And I also hooked my stock airbox up on the E28 to get every last ounce of power out of that motor. I raced the 328 and kept up very well. It has an M50 with silicone intake boot and an intake.

After we bled the brakes we took the car out for its first real drive. It did really well. It's having a little trouble in the high RPM but otherwise it's fine.

Here's my car and the 02 and my fixie.

Next on the list was to get that nasty not chrome exhaust tip chrome. I polished it a bit and I'll finish it up tomorrow.

Then I finished up my switch board that I made. I still need to find 2 more things to hook up

Thomas welded the fenders to the body so they stop flapping in the wind

Then I spent forever wiring it up. I had to change wires around and get them re organized and figure out what was what. I accidentally wired the horn into a constant positive and scared the shit out of myself and my dogs. Although on a good note I finally got the horn working.

Next to tackle was the not working tail lights and the braverse lights (The reverse lights come on when you hit the brakes. I changed some wires around and moved some bulbs and ta-da! Lights! Lots of them.

Backed the car out and it's so cold the exhaust literally looked like a steamboat. Sorry for the shitty pick. Best I could do.

Otherwise it was an extremely productive day. We got way more than we anticipated done. Tomorrow we're taking it to it's first ever car show in Burlington. It will have the E28 to keep it company.

Thomas took a few videos of both my new exhaust and the 02s so hopefully he'll post those somewhere. Both cars sound awesome.

So here's my part of the build.

We got the car to my house. It was probably the easiest car transport I've done. (Thomas's MKII fell off a ramp popped a tire ripped a hole in the floor and last time we trailered the 02 it get wedged on the trailer going on and we had to use a winch and like 5 people while it was raining.)

Anyway on to the build. First thing I did was clean the windsheild. It was gross as hell. Then I took some better photos with my car

Then we started work. As you've seen above we made a new exhaust. Basically we took the old side exit exhaust off of a truck (because we wanted the chrome tip and the glass pack) and chopped it up so it would fit on the 02 from the axle back.

Here's the car in the air, old exhaust off and new one being cut up.

    Some bits and peices

A nice interior shot. I'm going to work on cleaning that up today.

Here's our test fit. Basically we have an inverted connector at the end so we can run the glass pack. It fits snugly and it works so we just have to get it hung properly.

I spent a little while examining and cleaning around the carb. It looks to me like only one side of it is getting fuel. Not sure why but it also might be two stage and I just wasn't opening it up enough.

I cleaned up the filter housings.

It's still a little rusty but it's a lot better than it was.

Nice front end shot. I actually really like the beige with the black front valence.

This is one of our many parts boxes. That's our spare radiator for when the JB weld on this one breaks.

As far as the engine goes. Right now it runs. But it has to have the choke about half way out. Which is making me think it;s having ignition problems. But I think it might just be this disgusting fuel filter.

Here is the finished exhaust. It needs to be raised up and shortened but otherwise it looks decent. As far as the tip goes it's going to be rotated and polished so it looks nice.

Here's a nice engine bay shot. You can see the carb running with no filter. We can't find a replacement anywhere and the old one is to dirty to use.

As far as what's left to do obviously brakes. We're also going to take the diff down to a metal shop and have it welded because Like Thomas said we're still not the best welders. Other goals are to get the floor pans re done. The gas tank needs to be bolted down properly. We're going to make a harness bar. I've got my old harnesses from my e36 that we can throw in it. And I need to diagnose this running problem. We found water in the oil and so i'm assuming the spark plugs are fouled. It might need a head gasket. But that shouldn't be to hard.
