So here's what my Sunday consisted of.

Got the Euro logs off, going to be packing them up and sending them off to my friend Josh this week, I don't need them anymore. Going to have a good friend's shop make me a custom set of long tube headers when it all comes back together.

    .

I started getting the trans off the motor. That's not oil, that's black trans fluid.

Pretty sure this trans mount is dead.

This is where I got stuck for like 10 minutes. I never noticed the small piece of aluminum holding everything into the trans at the bottom of the trans.

    Almost off.

    Yay! Off!

Got the converter off as well. That took like 3 pry bars and 2 people to get the damn thing off. The snout is really in there.

Driver's side cam. Notice the broken cam bearing. On both sides the same bolt hole snapped.

Then I had some friends over to help me lift the motor onto the engine stand.

Lower oil pan off, you can kinda see the pump.

Upper off now too, looks good underneath don't see any damage.

    Almost bare block.

One of the cam bearing bolts decided it was going to strip completely. So I hacksawed the bitch off.

After both cams were off, and all but one of the head bolts were off the last one stripped out. So I'm going to have to buy a bolt extractor kit for this one. No hacksawing this time, I wanna keep my heads lol.

I've never been this sore in my life. I need to workout some.

Well I got the drivers side head off, no bent valves and other than just being dirty there's no real wear on the pistons or the cylinder walls. I might have gotten lucky with a low RPM guide failure. Going to unbolt the trans and get the motor on the engine stand tomorrow.

And this little guy is the reason my motor died.

Yup exactly. I'm actually looking for one large enough I can build a studio apartment into it so I can live there. A lift is a must, I'm taking the subfames and all off the 500, I'll need the ability to get it off the ground. I'm getting the Camaro sorted then I'm going full speed ahead on the the 500's restoration. I miss driving the car so much.

Doing my best man. I'm starting a new job with the county that pays 3 bucks more an hour. I'm hunting shops to rent so I can start taking this thing apart to the bare body, get the rust fixed, and replace or restore everything else.

I'm looking into having my buddies shop build me a custom EFI intake as well as custom headers, some machine work to the heads and block to run SBC flat top pistons, custom cams and associated parts. I'd love to make 400HP out of the motor N/A. A good friend who has a 84 500SE and I are looking into a Getrag 5 speed swap as well, AMG did it 30 years ago but its hard to find information on how they did it. People who own original cars with AMG 5 speed conversion won't share info like its some sort of secret.

No real updates. I've gotten the motor apart and am starting to inspect for the failure point.
Looking for a shop so I can start the restoration process. I'm trying to find more info on the M117's casting metallurgy so I can find the strongest block possible. I'd like to run SBC pistons in it so I have more options. But I'd have to bore the cylinder out to 101.6mm and I'm not sure there's enough meat on the block to pull that off.

I believe the first plate was a 80's French plate. I have it somewhere it my pile of parts.

She's done her time for sure. I'm just hoping I can have the ability to bring her back to her former glory, before she needs to be passed on.

But, a mini-update. I did get the motor/trans out of the car last weekend. I don't think you can tell in the pics but there is next to nothing as far as extra metal on the cylinder walls, its pretty crazy being used to America Iron. And now the hunt for a donor car kicks into high gear.

Its going to be a nightmare cleaning this engine bay.
