Lol, truth right there. I get to pull the whole thing since I'm rebuilding it.

      Not

What type if gpm do you see with it?
I enjoy working on it because I love the car. I got anywhere between 8-12MPG on a worn out motor. My buddy who has the same car, just non AMG gets around 17 city with a fresh motor.

I know, I moved and hadn't had time until yesterday to touch it. I was actually working on my Camaro yesterday and decided to mess with it while I was waiting on the Camaro to cool off.

        • Some progress made, and lots of frustration.

Got the "wiring harness" off, if you would call it that, its like 6 wires.

Then pulled almost all the bolts out of the intake, and broke my socket in the process.

Then the LAST bolt needed to take off the intake stripped.

This little fucker right here. It will be pulled with extreme prejudice this weekend.

          • Bit of a bump but any updates on this? I'm intrigued to see how the hell that engine came apart.

I wish I could give you some updates. I lost my job again, and haven't had reliable enough work to make enough extra money to fix the car. I can tell you that just about every bolt has stripped on my way to taking it apart. Its at the point now where I'm just better off finding a donor car than fixing this motor. I still have the car and I'm not planning on selling it, I just don't have the financial stability to fix it right now, the Camaro sucks up my extra car funds because its a pos and breaks every other week lol.

                • I'm not usually a fan of the big old Mercedes, but man, this body shape. So tuff. I appreciate the trials in this build (although you seem to be finding broken things, where I tend to have things broken by accident haha)

She's done her time for sure. I'm just hoping I can have the ability to bring her back to her former glory, before she needs to be passed on.

But, a mini-update. I did get the motor/trans out of the car last weekend. I don't think you can tell in the pics but there is next to nothing as far as extra metal on the cylinder walls, its pretty crazy being used to America Iron. And now the hunt for a donor car kicks into high gear.

Its going to be a nightmare cleaning this engine bay.

No real updates. I've gotten the motor apart and am starting to inspect for the failure point.
Looking for a shop so I can start the restoration process. I'm trying to find more info on the M117's casting metallurgy so I can find the strongest block possible. I'd like to run SBC pistons in it so I have more options. But I'd have to bore the cylinder out to 101.6mm and I'm not sure there's enough meat on the block to pull that off.

I believe the first plate was a 80's French plate. I have it somewhere it my pile of parts.

Doing my best man. I'm starting a new job with the county that pays 3 bucks more an hour. I'm hunting shops to rent so I can start taking this thing apart to the bare body, get the rust fixed, and replace or restore everything else.

I'm looking into having my buddies shop build me a custom EFI intake as well as custom headers, some machine work to the heads and block to run SBC flat top pistons, custom cams and associated parts. I'd love to make 400HP out of the motor N/A. A good friend who has a 84 500SE and I are looking into a Getrag 5 speed swap as well, AMG did it 30 years ago but its hard to find information on how they did it. People who own original cars with AMG 5 speed conversion won't share info like its some sort of secret.

                            • Congrats on the job (being a Port Orange City worker myself ), I'm guessing the benefit package is awesome.

As for a shop, look for something with enough space for a lift, it'll make life a lot easier.

Yup exactly. I'm actually looking for one large enough I can build a studio apartment into it so I can live there. A lift is a must, I'm taking the subfames and all off the 500, I'll need the ability to get it off the ground. I'm getting the Camaro sorted then I'm going full speed ahead on the the 500's restoration. I miss driving the car so much.
