  • Got oil pressure today by removing the coil wire and fuel pump fuse. The noise got much quieter but didn't go away. Something else is wrong.

Pulled the valve cover as it kinda sounds like a broken rocker. Oil tubes were dropping oil as normal but now I could hear the sound was at the bottom of the engine.

I jack up the car and climb under.

Adam was here to help and was cranking to motor while I listened.

It sounds like its coming from the flywheel cover. Rightfully so, as the flywheel cover has a huge dent in it from me dropping the engine on it. Sure enough it dented that and the oil pan, causing the pan to hit the 6 cyl connecting rod every time it comes around.

Oil pan must come off and get the dent removed. I'm just going to hang the engine as it sits
    And drop the front subframe.

      • I take back what I said.

It's most definitely an enternal engine issue.

        Oil pan is off.

        Thump is still there.

I have no idea where to go next.

Sometimes its like, God, what are you trying to show me here?

I need to stop questioning and just draw closer and be thankful for what I have and where I am.

So thank you all for being here and supportive, and hilarious.

Thank you God that the worst problem in my life is a knocking sound in my engine.

        • based on your description of the noise it sounds like a big end bearing may be gone. i hope not for your sake.

          good luck with it all

          Cheers,
          Ben.

            Amen to that bro.

don't get discouraged by that weird sound. quick tip: take a long metal stick and place it on top of different engine parts. then put your ear on top of that metal stick (screwdriver e.g.) and you might be able to locate the problem by hearing it. has already worked for me, maybe its worth a try. maybe not, since that noise is really really loud.

going to make myself a tasty sammich nao, thanks for the inspiration.

Working on it. It will be November before this car drives again.

                      I've been riding the bus.

I have a chance to buy a car cash, or finance if I want. But you will never understand until you drive an e28, when I say. FK that. E28 for life. Ride a bus till I die son.

I miss driving my bucket of crap.

                          • fwiw, a backed-out spark plug will make that exact same sound, and that's common on m30s.

*edit* while running, they make that same sound. Never heard that with the pan off and it just rotating on the starter though. Might be something else, just a suggestion to check out.

                            • My M30 makes noise, But all older inline 6's do. Also, I agree with the whole, "I'd rather ride the bus then not drive the E28. Someone offered me $3950 for mine, and I turned them down with out even thinking about it. Loving your style of this thread. Sandwich's rock sauce.

I have been giggling and smiling while reading this entire thread today. The praying mantis bit and the engine jokes are a solid reminder that I miss doing what you're doing.

I hope you can get the motor all straightened out, my heart sank when I played the video.

All the best, may God be watching over you and your beautiful E28.
