They just look so damn good on so many applications. Wow in that case the T2i/Magic Lantern combo is killer ! Can't wait for the updates, I love your 'understated' style, like you did with the EG. Have you given any thought to a Nardi steering wheel?
Right on, just hang in there, the right deal will pop up. I agree, although the Diamond Racings are sometimes frowned upon (mainly because some people only like rare 3-piece wheels), I think they are awesome. They just look rad, and are super affordable. The only downside is the weight.

The T2i/Magic Lantern combo is amazing, but honestly, it's not always what camera you have, it's what lens you use. This whole build has been documented with my T2i, and up until a few weeks ago I was mainly using the stock lens (which in my opinion usually takes pretty bland photos, but it's a decent lens). The 50mm is a different story, I think it takes much better photos mainly because of it's low aperture capabilities. I always shoot in f/1.8 no matter how bright it is outside, and that's what gives my photos that noticeable depth of field.

And thank you, I like to keep things simple and clean. I am by no means a flashy person when it comes to anything, I wear plain black or white shirts with no logo like 90% of the time haha. I was considering a Nardi wheel but then found this other wooden one for $40 new and love the way it looks so I'm sticking with it.

Thanks man, I'm really happy with the way the wheels look. It was an awesome feeling to finally have it welded in, especially since majority of this build has consisted of disassembly and tedious paint/rust removal so far. It was nice to focus on the stance, it's kind of what I'm looking forward to most with this car.

    • I might have missed it but what wheel did you go with? I'm wanting to go with a dark wood grain wheel but haven't been able to pull the trigger on a nardi yet due to the price haha.

Do you have an air compressor? If so you need to pick up an air die grinder its like 10$ from harbour

Get some Roloc pads and you will save hours and hours in the tight places. You can get it all for under 30$ with a bunch of pads

I use this thing for everything. Best little piece of equipment for a rusty car.
green plastic roloc pads are bomb for removing paint in shitty places all over my dad's 02
Hatchbacks, wagons... It's NOT all the same. You want in? Don't get a mazda 3, get a mazda 6 wagon. Don't get a wrx get a legacy wagon. and theres a reason the A3 isn't called the A3 avant... Scion does not make a wagon it makes a weird van, but no wagons

        Sincerely,
        The Wagon Mafia:Inner Circle
P.S. Is your tail a wagon?

        Show cars are lame.

Only issue is the only wood one they have is 330mm, I'm wanting bigger. Good prices though

Yeah personally, I love Diamond Racing Steelies - like you said super affordable and nice looking on a bunch of cars. Totally agree with you, annoys me when people are closed off to their own styles and aren't willing to even consider anything else. Thanks for all the info on the camera etc, looking to upgrade to something decent soonish and you've given me a helpful insight

I totally hear you, theres something really special about a clean build, just does so much more for me than an over the top money-no-object build. Good on ya for finding that other wheel - Nardis are suuuper expensive and that wheel looks pretty nice and is cost effective! May I ask what your plans are for the interior? Loving your updates so far haha

I'm retrofitting seats from a MKIV GTI into the '02. You can see the whole process a few pages back. I'm going to go all black with the interior. Carpet, seats, door panels, even the headliner will be black. I really love the original Tobacco interior, but for this build I wanted to go all black.

                        • Alright got a little bit of work done today. Mainly just grinding away at the welds, lots and lots of grinding.

But first I had to deal with this area. The MK1 fender had a little section which bulged out a bit, so I had to cut that out because it wouldn't work with the '02 body. So there was a gap:

So I had to make this janky little piece of metal, it actually fit in the gap perfectly:

Welded up, looks kind of rough. Whatever, still learning:

So then I started grinding down the welds:

Hit it with a flap disk, this whole process took forever:

Then I brought the fender down to bare metal in preparation of filler and primer, the black paint that was originally on there chipped off really easily, so I don't trust it:

It looks kind of rough in the pictures, but I really think getting it to look good is totally doable. I want it to look as if it came that way from the factory, so we'll see what happens.

Sweet, not sure what the comforts like of the standard '02 seats but they've got to be an upgrade. Sounds nice, enjoying it so far. I think I missed that bit, will have to have a look and read over it
