  • Thinking of getting into photography

As the title states, I was thinkin about getting into the hobby but there's only one problem; I know nothing about photography. So with that stated I was just curious to know, what would be a good starting camera and the necessary stuff I'll need. I figured I'd ask you guys because I've looked at some of work posted here and I'm simply amazed at how awesome they are. You guys are all legit so I wanted to ask you. Any suggestions will help and be greatly appreciated.

What do you plan to shoot? Strictly automotive? Landscape? Portraiture? Wildlife? Weddings? Do you plan on doing a lot of on-the-fly low light shooting?

Do you plan on spending a lot of time and money on this? The initial purchase is expensive, but buying more lenses will easily triple your investment in no time. If you aren't interested in spending more than your initial investment then you'll be much better off with a high end point and shoot camera as they can cover a lot more types of photography than a DSLR with just one lens can.

Just as a general recommendation for a $700 budget I'd say a Canon Rebel XSi and a Canon 28-135 lens. That would be my preferred beginner's setup.

I'd say it's going to be predominantly automotive and a little bit of landscape and on the fly. No weddings or fancy stuff like that.

              x2.

The Rebel XSi is a really good beginners setup (I know used to have one), takes quality shots, and when used with the right lens setup its really good. I would start with the 28-135mm and then just upgrade lenses as I went along getting wide angles, zooms, etc.

Just curious, what do you guys recommend for the "on the fly low-light shooting"?? I've got an XSi and I love it, but absolutely **** using the pop-up flash. I would definitely recommend the XSi with the 28-135mm as it is what I have been using for about 2 years now

Get some speedlights and triggers. Used Vivitars are a good option, great flash for really cheap.

used nikon d70, used nikon 35mm 1.8 and a used nikon 50mm 1.8. WELL under your budget and will work great for what you need. TRUST.

Low light photography (without a tripod) will require one of 3 things (or all 3). A body that has good high ISO performance, a fast lens (f/2.8) or a flash.

I wish I had the money to get started but any money I get is going towards fixing some things on the car. Ahhhhh I **** waiting. I'm so impatient

I've heard Vivitar flashes with cactus wireless triggers are a good option as far as budget flash goes, but where can one find such setups? If you guys know of any good places to pick up used gear, please share some links!

                          Thanks for the input

Adorama, B&H photo, check forums, eBay, Craigslist, those places will have cheaper equipment whether it be used or just because they are cheaper. All of them can be great resources.
