  • Canon lens advice

A lot of keen photographers on here, so thought I'd just throw this out there.

    I've wanted a wider lens for a while now, I have a Canon 40D with the 18-75 standard lens, 50mm f/1.8, and a Peleng 8mm.

I was after something like the Canon 10-22 or Sigma alternative, but just thinking about a prime instead, I've no idea what is really out there or the prices (except the Canon 17mm is it?, for £1900). Around 10mm to 20mm max ideally.

Is it worth looking for a well priced prime? I mean I love the crispness of the 50mm against the standard lens, but this might just be the fact its a kit lens.

    These were the original wishlist,

I was swaying towards the Tamron for price reasons.

if i read your post right you said you have an 8mm lens already? im not sure they get much wider to be honest. i know sigma just came out with a 8-16mm but as far as i know thats as wide as your gunna get. and 8mm is pretty damn wide lol. i to am on the look out for a wider lens, something like a sigma 10-20 or a nikor 10-24 but there f*ckin expensive lol

The Peleng isn't great, well I haven't got the hang of it I should say.

I am looking for something a little less wide lol, and of better quality if possible.

Ive used the sigma 30mm 1.4 and I really like the photos it produces...

I was also looking as the 24mm 2.8, but I havent used it just yet...

The more I Google similar questions, without spending £1k plus, it looks like the Canon 12-24 or the Sigma 10-20 (f4-5.6, rather than the newer f3.5) are the best two options anyway.

the Signa 10-20 is a great lens, as long as you get a good copy.... They are great for what you would probably use it though.

I would fork out the bit extra and go for the 3.5 though, but thats personal preference.

See I've been reading online and they say the opposite, why would you suggest the f3.5?

Online they say unless you do a lot of indoor shooting you will be okay with the f4-5.6. It is a fixed 3.5 isn't it?

It is, Like I said, its personal preference. I like a lower F on my lenses due to the type of photograph I like to take. To be honest I like to use a wide angle when Im close to a vehicle, or when I am trying to get it in a pic with the surrounding landscape.. So I prefer to have the focal point on the car, and dont really care about the background a great deal. But thats just how I see it.

That is why I love my f/1.8 50mm, it rarely sees anything about f/4. I think I over use depth of field though when you should be getting a little more in focus.

Think I will keep an eye out for a 2nd hand Sigma going, and see which comes up first within budget. I don't get out there enough with the camera to justify buying new.

i have the sigma 10-20 4-5.6 and its a great lens, however i wish i woulda picked up the tokina 11-16 2.8 due to depth of field... if the 2.8 isnt a major concern the sigma is a great lens and from what i gather sharper then the canon 10-22 and cheaper

The 10-22 canon is only an ef-s lens if I remember right...

I shot the UK Stanceworks meet on a sigma 10-20mm

I like it, but then again, i havent had that much experience, so i cant really compare very well.

I personally would only buy Canon lenses. If you do decide to go with Sigma or anyother aftermarket company, I would definitely buy the lens in person at a camera shop so you can try the lens out before buying to avoid getting a bad piece of glass.
