its pretty deep yeah - the only steampunk specific 'convention' in the UK is held in my hometown every summer and they take over the entire 'old' part of the town. pubs put on special victorian nights while its on as well.
I would say I haven't met anyone hugely immersed yet, but one of my best friends dresses in the style 24/7 and runs a bakery/jewellers by hand. She crae.
