Need to take my time when it comes to the E36. If I was to continue to heat the arch a little whilst someone was rolling, would that make it easier?

You need to pre-heat the guard really well, then work slowly and take your time, don't put too much pressure as that is what causes rough looking guards and some times puts a kink in the metal.

The hotter you keep the metal the better will be the result

This. I did mine with a bit of heat and a soft faced dead blow. Turned out pretty damn good.
