I'm getting transferred to a GS IT job out here and wanted to see if you knew about some rumor that IT folks got a pay bonus because of being in IT.

If you are a specialist (2210 series) and a GS9 or under then its like an extra 5k over what a normal GS9 makes.

For my area a GS11 makes a bit more than what a GS11 2210 makes so I get the GS11 pay. Its because the 2210 series has an odd locality pay that is matched up with different regions. IIRC the Hartford area is branched in with Detroit and a couple other areas.

        TLDR:
        Maybe

Cool, I'm radio, so i'll end up as a GS 9/11 0391 series. Got to hold out as a 9 for a year than I bump to an 11.

As long as you're okay with it being an overpriced Passat with bling then you really have nothing to lose.
Because when you don't fix shit when shit breaks, it breaks more things.

                Fuck yeah.

What's nice is that as an gs11 I could walk into my bosses gs12 job when he leaves in 4 years.

Not bad for starting as a seasonal WG-4 5 years ago.

                  Nice.

I'm hoping to get a GS12 overseas in a couple years, play that game for 3 years, then come back to a GS13. Hopefully all before I turn 40. Should give me another 15 years to make it to GS14-15.

Fuck ya. I should be an 11 before I hit 30, and hopefully a 12 at 35. I'm just hoping they keep the high 3 retirement policy the same.

It's the same thing a private sector, but you have to play politics and bounce around to get promotions. Retirement plan is usually better too.

I'm sure we'll be grandfathered in, thats what they always do.

I have awesome benefits and a pretty solid pension where I am. I don't disagree about the politics, but where I'm at seems to be pretty upfront no political BS.

                              Government acronym's 101

WG= Wage grade. Like blue collar paid by the hour jobs
                              WL= Work leader, Middle management
GS= General Schedule. White collar tech, admin jobs. salaried stuff.

GS jobs have a series of planned pay raises, 10 in total. raise 1-3 come every year 2 years for step 4-6 and 3 years between 7-10. 18 years to max out your pay grade.

Unless you plan on doing management expect on staying at a GS 11-12 pay grade.

Number=pay grade (more monies on a scale of 1-15)

GS11 starts at about 64k in our area and tops out at around 80k.
GS12 starts at 74k and tops out around 90k.

We get "step increases" every year, which is about 1500 bucks. You usually start at step one and can make it to 10.
Every year they have bonus's, paid time off, or an extra step increase for top performers (if there is money).

Oh and a COLA (Cost of living increase). Usually 2-3% every year, but its been like 2.2% the last 6 years Obama has been in office. We are probably all going to get like a 4-5% increase right before or after the upcoming election.

We get FERS for retirement and TSP.

FERS is 30% (if we stay 30 years) of our top 3 years.
TSP is a 401K like program with up to 5% matching. I do 5% so they match 5%.
