My 43 year old TH350 still shifts smooth as can be. My old 31TH ran like a champ after 10 years.
However my only 10 year old 41TE (electronically controlled) decided to catestrophically fail, and not even from the electronics. Just like all the others it decided it would transform the pump into chunks of steel.
Design is the important factor. A manual transmission with a weak OD gear, weak shift forks is just as likely to bite the dust as an auto with problematic bands or valves.
