I agree 100%. I just really hope manufacturers would retain the option of a traditional manual transmission or floppy paddle gearbox, not just one or the other. I refuse to even look at purchasing a car unless it has 3 pedals.

i read an article in Motortrend or Car & Driver last year stating that americans and europeans have different views about manual transmissions. the article said europeans view manuals as a cost saving option, like getting manual windows or no A/C to save money when buying a beater car. conversely americans associate manuals with performance in sports cars. so an american would demand a manual in a M5 because its a sports car. an european would demand the fancy auto in a M5 because its considered an option befitting a luxury car. in a toyota corolla the american would demand an auto because the car isn't sporty in the first place and the auto is viewed as a convenience option like power windows. a european would get a manual in a corolla because it's a beater (would be like asking for leather interior option). that's what the article stated.

dsg has exactly that, for when you are cruising, put it in auto, sporty driving and race, use the gear lever or flappy paddle

While I agree, it is still not a matter of get in and all of a sudden you are the best driver in the world. Driving in these new cars with flappy paddle lightning shift boxes is still not easy, and it does take skill and finesse to really get the most out of them.

Do I think traditional 3 pedal is more fun? Absolutely. Does it provide me with a certain satisfaction that nothing else can quite replicate? Absolutely. But cars are so much more advanced now, with all of these computers and 50 types of traction control, damper stiffening, etc, the cars are reacting wayyyy faster than they used to, so why not have a transmission that matches up that you can get the most out of the car with?

I'd also like to take the time and say that the US is the only market to get the new M cars in 6spd as well... SO FUCK YEAH BMW!

I'd almost always take a 3 pedal, but having that option for DSG or whatever the manufacturer calls it, is definitely a nice bonus.

While I give a ton of credit to the new technology and innovation that goes into cars and makes them shift lightning fast, it will never, ever match the satisfaction you get from rowing your own gears.

Any fool can get in a car and pull back a video game lever to change gears. Watching a skilled driver heel-toe and rev-match while banging gears is just art in motion.
