Overall I prefer manual but automatic isn't bad depending on the car. I can't afford and don't want most newer cars so its not a big deal honestly.

BMW had its heritage based in high performance racecars only produced for homoligation, (M1 and e30M) i am willing to bet that my M will be the last time a naturally aspirated V8 finds itself in an M3... and that saddens me.
you mean only time it ever finds it's way into an m3?
Hatchbacks, wagons... It's NOT all the same. You want in? Don't get a mazda 3, get a mazda 6 wagon. Don't get a wrx get a legacy wagon. and theres a reason the A3 isn't called the A3 avant... Scion does not make a wagon it makes a weird van, but no wagons

reverse manual valve body with a transbrake in an automatic is where its at

but you need something powerful for that haha

standards are best in nutless daily driver type stuff though

I did my part. I bought the only heavy duty pickup to still offer the manual option, and I love it. Feels like a truck should, and is far more effective for towing. Well, that and the good 'ol MB G56 won't blow up like the Chrysler 68RFE will.

Sad part is I had to custom order it from the factory to get it. Otherwise the nearest manual, not even close to the specs I would like, was over 500 miles away.

i originally ***** my r56 for not having a manual, but it grew on me, when in LA during rush hour its a breeze... when i want to thrash it around i flip on "sport mode" and use the -/+ or the flappy shifters.

i do miss a manual and would take it over the auto CVT, i just drive around thinking to myself that i have a "clutchless manual transmission".

but manual is the way to go.

I hear the G56 has oil temp issues under load. That aside, I love the way they feel when shifting. They're the most float-friendly synchronized truck trans I've ever driven.

Manual is the cheapest and most reliable gearbox you can get.
You could buy a car that is form the 50s and it would probably still have an original working manual gearbox.
But buying an Auto car that is 10years old is like taking a gamble when will the box shit itself and cost you money.

With more electronics and more expensive things like DSG is just more things that could go wrong, and they will go wrong with age, so I predict the DSG cars will have a worse resale value over a proper manual once they have some miles on the clock.

I haven't seen any temperature issues yet, even when towing.

My only gripes are the long throw and that it's tough to pop out of reverse when it's very cold out.

                            Otherwise she's smooth as butter.

                            It depends.

My 43 year old TH350 still shifts smooth as can be. My old 31TH ran like a champ after 10 years.

However my only 10 year old 41TE (electronically controlled) decided to catestrophically fail, and not even from the electronics. Just like all the others it decided it would transform the pump into chunks of steel.

Design is the important factor. A manual transmission with a weak OD gear, weak shift forks is just as likely to bite the dust as an auto with problematic bands or valves.
