I started out with hot rods, only thing is that I never had someone to show me the ropes. Lots of trial and error.

Trial and error is what makes building cars interesting. Also part of what clarifies "building a car"

i think our generation fell slightly too far out in terms of the lifestyle that is hotrodding. If you dont have a father who was into it, its not passed down quite the same. Or at least thats in my experience. And its a real shame..

With that said, I would love to learn more about the craft, not only to improve the way I build cars, but to understand the mindset and passion for these machines and the level of fabrication. Remember, there were no forums to ask questions, no How To articles, its part of what made things of the time truly unique.

I am going to call out to a few local hot rod shops to see if they can host an "open house" of sorts. I would love to get some of us guys together with guys of that generation to learn from each other. I have a feeling this could be a very interesting type of event, and could lead to lots of: learning, experimenting and building, and friendship which is what this culture is

Owning an Alfa Romeo is like having a supermodel as a girlfriend. Yes, she is a bit stupid. Yes, she is expensive but fuck it! She is soo damn HOT!!!

lol well there was a lot more errors going on. Here's the two I never finished.

frist one was a 65 ford fairlane I bought when I was 16. Build the motor myself in my bedroom with the help of my dad and built the chassis myself with a welder and books...

second was a '52 ford F2, chopped it myself and used the drivetrain from the fairlane.

I really miss working with old steel, partly why I love my e28... seems to the be the best of both worlds.

Here are some photos of a guy I met out at a local cruise in. Really cool guy, a true artist. He said it took him ~16 months to build in his spare time. He owns a machine shop full time. Best part is he drove it to the cruise in, drove it out. Sounded amazing.

Well put. I would also be in for an "open house" kind of thing with an old speed shop or something like that. The knowledge that these guys have is outrageous. I'm in the central jersey area so not too far from you.

i agree completely, i haven't had anything like that passed down to me either. but thats what i want to do, just build beautiful machines like they did back in the day.
i'm in utah and i'm trying to find some shops out here to figure out where and how to get my start. i'm only 17.

While I do love the look of a good classic hot rod or cruiser, i equally **** the rat rod trend that has resurfaced in recent years. It just looks half assed and thrown together. I feel the same for these things as I feel for thrown together newer cars (Civic, E36, E30 or Golf). It seens like you spent too much time trying to fit in than what matters about the scene, the cars. Just my opinion though.
