If you're going to get an older Jag, you might as well get an older Jag.

01's had timing chain issues, I wouldn't get an XJ pre 03.

They really aren't that bad though. They're like any car, start with a good one and it'll be good, start with a bad one and it'll be bad. We had 3 customers with Jags at a shop I worked at, 2 were mint with over 100k on them and only ever needed routine service. The other one was completely beat to shit and had so many issues.

And the specialty tools required for a timing chain repair on these cars coupled with the catastrophic failure if it's not done exactly by procedure....In some cases cars aren't common because they suck and/or are horribly unreliable.

buy it if you're willing to undergo a risk. buying a jag is like going "all in" with a bad hand and hoping your rival buys your bluff...either it's works or your loosing a lot of money...

but i like the way the xj's look...go and get it,...
          I drive what I want, and what I ain't drivin' I don't want...

My father had an 01 xjr, the car was flawless for us. Only ever needed routine maintenance. Absolutely loved the drive and power. I now own an M5, and while it is quicker and handles a bit better, I always have a soft spot for the class of the jag.
I would definitely do it if I were you.

Inb4 faulty timing chain tensioners cause catastrophic engine failure.

...I'm a service advisor at a Jaguar/Land Rover/Ferrari/Maserati/Lotus specialist. They're pretty cars, but you couldn't give me one of those things for free.

I see a trend with people who know these car beginning here

It's a great car. Just make sure you update the timing chain tensioners.

My mom has owned an '01 XKR since new. Zero issues.
