with all due respect, you sound like a person who thinks a gun adds an inch to their cock.

a few untrained civilians with 9mm's and 6 shooters will never ever deter a nation from invading another.

I do think that guns act as a crime deterrent. In NYC where i live there are strong gun policies (unregistered fire arms get a mandatory minimum sentence of 3 years). I will say that all the bad guys have guns and regular civilians have none and they know this. They are getting pretty reckless with the crimes too, rapes in building lobbies, robberies on main streets in broad daylight etc etc.

but do i think everyone in nyc should have a gun? no, but it sure as hell would make everyone nicer to each other knowing that the taxi guy or old man walking slow in front of you could pull out a piece if you dont act like a human should. This is the reason i believe the southerner is perceived as "nicer" or has more "manners" than a new yorker or bostonian etc. for the simple fact that they HAVE to be nicer because if you step out of line there will be consequences.

I agree. The 2nd Amendment was not written so we could stop invaders in our country. It was written to protect this countries citizens from crime and the tyranny of it's own government.

All we have to do is look to the founding fathers own words to determine what was intended by each amendment in the Bill of Rights, something our courts and legislators have lost grasp of.

Actually, it was written to protect the new country from invaders *coughBRITISHANDNATIVEScough*. It just happens to remain convenient, thanks to the decline of society.

I can't believe the responses in this thread! Most American members are in favor while members from the rest of the world read on in shock. IMO this is a fucking disgrace and this is why you have the problems you do. When will the US learn that more guns isn't the answer...

                    Cliffs:

A crazed murderer/gang member/mentally unstable person is going to carry a gun on or off campus, no matter the laws.

lol. keep the government in check.

last time i checked, Australia wasnt in any danger of the government getting out of control.

LOL, talk about short sighted. our founders gave the constitiution to protect the people of the land from their current and FUTURE threats. read up on world history. time has shown over and over again that a nation's own people that aren't armed wont last long. if you rely on others to protect yourself and your family, then good luck to you.

Hypothetical situation... Imagine the US government goes tyrannical on us for some reason. Is it really reasonable to think that the US citizens, armed with some basic hand guns and hunting rifles, will be able to protect themselves from the hands of the US government, Police force, and US army?

That concept made sense when the armies were armed solely with muskets and cannons, but I don't see it adapting well to a time when the government/army is heavily trained and armed with high end weapons, vehicles, air force, and bombs.

Arming our citizens with some minor guns will allow them to put up a bit of a fight when the first riots were to break out, but once the army is called in to enforce the tyranny they don't really stand much chance fighting back.

*The obvious exception here is that the Army might not agree with or work with the tyrannical government, but for the sake of the hypothetical situation, this exception doesn't address the second amendment rights*

Thank you! If you live in a CIVILIZED society, there is NO need for a gun in a civilian's home. The infrastructure is there so that the local and federal police can quickly aid you. Army is a different situation since we are talking about handguns, and no matter what some of the dreamers on here think, but a handgun per family won't protect you if the 'government turns against you.' Wow some of the ideas here... where do they come up with it?
