  • W124 Rear Coilover/Spring Setup

Hey everyone, I am wondering what you w124 owners have as far as rear suspension? I am on cut coils with my w124 wagon with SLS delete and rides like complete crap. Since my cut coils are designed to work with the Self Leveling System, I know the current 9" springs are too soft for the weight of my 3300lb wagon. Saab 900 KYB shocks I have are completely blown and have Bilstein 4600 Ranger shocks waiting to be mounted. I am running e36 coilovers up front at the moment and have no complaints about them.

I have been looking into purchasing a pair of Eibach ERS Springs 2.25" from Ground Control as used on their 190e 16v coilover setup paired with their rear height adjusters to fix the problem as w201 and w124 are interchangeable. Since the spring rates are custom, I am guessing a 800-850lb spring should make a huge difference and reduce bounce.

Here's the link to the 190e coilovers offered by G/C:

Im on cut v8 w124 springs out back with stock sls with reset neutral point. Ride is ok.. but still kinda bouncy.

When you say your ride quality sucks, what exactly is going on? Are you bottoming out in the rear, or is the ride bouncy, or both? The solution might be different depending upon what's going on.

If you're bottoming out, obviously a stiffer spring and a shorter shock will be the solution, along with maybe a progressive bumpstop. However, you're going to have to have a very stiff set of dampers to compensate for the stiff springs' tendency to induce bounce.

If bounce is your primary issue, I'd start by getting some decent rear shocks on there and see where you're at. Stiffer springs will often exaggerate bounce rather than calm it, at least if you're underdamped, which is why you see all those tards in EG hatches on cut springs and stock dampers bouncing over every expansion joint on the highway.

Out of curiosity, are the Bilstein 4600s stiffer than stock W124 non-SLS dampers, do you know? People swear by Bilstein Sports, but I don't know if they're going to be short enough for the S124 application, since your rear shocks mount lower at the top than on a sedan.
