  • BBS RS - shave backpad for more offset?

I have a set of 17x8"/9" et 7/18 (1.5" lips all around) BBS RS that have been changed to 5x120 via inserts.
I want to rebuild them for my '90 535i. The best I think I can do is leave the front alone and swap the 1.5" lip on the rear for a 2.5" lip. Swapping the front lip to anything larger will require major fender work and I don't want to get into that this time around. Just a simple roll and minor to no tire stretch with track days in mind.
It would seem that there is a lot of meat on the back pad that I am guessing is what is giving them the 'relatively' aggressive offset.

Any idea if it would be safe to have a machine shop shave off 10mm off the back?
My goal would be to go to a 2.5" lip up front and a 3.5" lip out back.

What model RS are they? It would be a shame to waste a set of high pad faces if youre going to mill them down. I may have some faces to trade you possibly if need be depending on what model faces yours are

damn, ive been searching for those very faces for some time. haha. Problem is that I needed them in 5x114 but whatever.

You can likely have the pad milled down, but personally if i were you, I would try to trade with someone who has a set of rs212 faces instead. They have a lower backpad height and are 5x120 original. Solves the problem, and maybe makes someone with a bbk much happier.

I had 2 sets of 212s but unfortunately they are both gone.... Would love to have traded these faces for those.

They were 5x114 originally. If the inserts were removed would that put them back to 5x114?
I'm a complete newb to this so please forgive my ignorance.

yeah not really. Inserts are drilled larger and then they press the insert in. they basically enlarge the hole enough to get the steel lug seat in and then press it into place. really no going back to 5x114 unless they are welded shut and they start fresh...

to answer your original question, yes those can be milled down a bit to help with your offset issues, but the inserts are going to need to be pressed out, and re-seated once you mill the pad provided there is enough meat there. Its not as straight forward since there is now a steel insert in your way of the machining process.

other option is to mill the faces, well the holes shut and then redrill to 5x120... again, work intensive

              Thanks for your help!!

With the amount of work to get these to fit I might just take the plunge and do the body work necessary for the look I'm after.
