Werent the European VW guys stretching tires first to fit wider wheels because of some laws or something like that? Not really stanced, but definitely a start.

Drift cars. VW's were doing it and a lot of people were doing it before them, but no one cared until the drift bandwagon started and everyone saw the JDM drift cars with stretched tires and blah blah.

When the economy took a turn for the worse people couldn't afford properly sized tires so they had to buy small tires creating... stance.

VW paved the way and started the whole movement, so kudos to you guys. With that being said the JDM or Import scene is killing it right now, hands down..

Yes, laws came out in Europe to where tires weren't allowed to be outside of the fender. The european crowd wanted to keep their wheel width and still be able to go low and keep stance so what they did was buy smaller tires and "stretch" them to achieve this. I'm not saying that the Euro scene was the first to have stance but they were the first to stretch their tires due to laws.

My vote is definitely for VW.

to me its any euros in general.
mainly because most euros have flared fender arches.
                  which mean sick stances.
idk if this makes sense. sorry im tipsylol

I guess this poll depends on which forums you visited the most...

                      Some examples...
                      Bosozoku
                      Sexy Knights
                      Mitsuru Haraguchi (326 Power)
                      Yoshinori Koguchi
                      Fumiaki Komatsu (Drifter X)
                      BN Sports (Blister)
                      A Bo Moon
                      Team Magician
                      Team Burst
                      Pink Godzira
                      Anything VIP

These individuals/crews/companies/cars sparked the stance scene for me.

VWs have been doing it forever, VIP guys for a long time, and the 240/drift guys had it down years ago too. It's very recently trickled down to other marques and types of cars and became the 'it' thing to do

I'd say it started with the VIP platform cars but then the origin of VIP also stems from German Luxury influences i THINK. the crazy fitment could have very well been a Japanese influence but we may never know. Tire stretch was spawned out of necessity then folks just so happened to take it to another level over the years. as for who is "Doing Work" in the scene these days... as Royal_T stated the "JDM" boys or Honda owners are pushing the envelope more than ever! Sure dubbers have been doing it but as DubMd stated most Euros come stock with flares and arches so its not that uncommon to fill them up with fitment goodness. But it's more of a task with Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans, & Mazdas. Even i laugh when saying this but... The Jap sport compacts actually have to REALLY do homework. We havent always had Blueprints as my good friend JITB would say.
