  • LS2 Dogbox FC swap

    This is copied from other forums I frequenty -if there are errors or missing pics I'll fix them later -anyway here you go:

    OK I'm about to get things moving on my swap and figured I'd start a thread here.

    87 base FC

    For the 09 season I ran the 13b na, TII brakes, TII Rear, OS Giken diff, Stance Al Pro+ coiliovers.

    Here is how she sat before the deconstruction:

    The Plan:
    LS2 from a 05 GTO 2000 miles on it -bought and paid for

    4 Speed G force trans, GF4A or it's the same thing as Tex 101-A it's a dogring clutch assisted box... basically clutchless upshifts -but you use the clutch to downshift or start from a stop. I chose this gearbox for several reasons... it's track tested and works, damn well... There are just about any gear ratios imaginable availible and the FC rear has 4.11:1 gears making the T56 (6-speed stock GTO/F-body trans) not a great option -end up constantly shifting/short gears. Also people are asking stupid money for the T56 over here, like $1300 for one with 100,000 miles on it.
    I have a deposit on the trans and it is being built to my specs, basically here is what I'm looking at:
    1st=60mph, 2nd=95mph, 3rd=132mph, 4th will be a .75 overdrive for the highway so for all practical purposes it's a 3 speed

    RPS custom ultra lite clutch/fw combo
    JTR 1-3/4" ceramic coated headers, X-pipe, 3" out the back, no mufflers
    DSS custom driveshaft
    LS1 PCM and wiring harness, ditching the drive by wire
    Sumped fuel tank with Aeromotive goodies and SS line
    Very basic 6pt cage
    I'm keeping full interior, this will be a street/drift car
    Custom cooling stuff
    Accusump goodies...
    the list goes on and on

    Just got going this weekend:

    Rotary is out! wow is the engine bay a mess! I'm going to spend the next few days just cleaning and removing unneeded crap. Sold my Engine/trans for $500 -not bad, that will go toward my headers.

    sorry about bad quality, phone pics.

    here's some grass from the landscaping I did at the last event

    Started to clean things up a bit:

    more stuff out:

    UPDATE:

    rad support and some other shit I dont need is gone

    Interior out and stating on the cage soon:

    I'll be putting the interior back in... this is a street/track car.

    Trans stuff is sorted out...

    G-Force fucked me... I was quoted one price for a very specific trans, then was told it could not be built (this is after talking to the builder in detail and he said no problem) then the price doubled from what I was quoted. I'll never do business with them again, it was as if they did not wanna do the build and just threw a high number at me so I would go away... well I did... I went away and found a better deal with the exact ratios I need and met a really nice guy in the process.

    Bought this one right out of Perry Tripp's ARCA car for $3000 less than G-Force wanted.

    It's getting rebuilt with the gear ratios I want and should ship out in about a week.

    It's a Tex Racing T-101 4 speed dogbox. Got a really good deal considering the closest quote I got to build it to my specs was $1000 more than what Perry asked for. He's a super cool guy and very talented driver, I told him what I was building and he laughed a bit and said it's going to be a fun car... cannot wait to get behind the wheel.

    Going with a quicktime bellhousing:

    RM-6036SFI Certified @ 6.1

    RM-6036 - Chevy LS Bellhousing/Richmond Style Transmission

    * Height = 6.290
    * Trans. Bore Ø = 4.685
    * Engine = Chevy LS-1, LS-2, LS-3, LS-6, LS-7, LS-9
    * Trans. = Richmond, Saginaw, Muncie, Bert, Brinn, Chevy TKO 500-600
    * Clutch Ø = 11"
    * Flywheel = 168 tooth or 153 tooth
    * Weight = 22#
    * Stock Shifter fork & throwout bearing
    * Passed ALL SFI testing
    * Pivot ball, full engine plate and grade 8 bolts included

    And this little guy:

    Trans came in today:

    here it is after an hour of cleaning and some engine enamel:

    only what... 4 months till I get to use it

    Here are a few more pics:

    one for scale:

    stich welded the engine bay this morning.

    Welds came out pretty good considering I have not really welded much in YEARS.

    Sorry this one came out blurry:

    did some crap that I thought was going to be a pain... the subframe bushings.

    Air motherfucking hammer to the rescue. I had BOTH out in about 15min.

    Here is the MMR bushings -fit right in no issues.

    Here's a pic of the whole subframe -my friend Nick at Elite JDM in philly hooked me up. This sub is in awesome condition! I welded up all the seams and am going to re enforce the mount for the diff as I will be going solid.

    Here's some better shots of the stitching... I ground down a few high spots -and I did burn through the body in 2 spots that I'm going to have to go back and repair :runaway: I have plenty of 16g sheet metal sitting around.

    -shit, never mind they are blurry again...

    also snapped a few shots of the trans to send to quartermaster if there is an issue... in fact I may just reach out to the tech I spoke to tomorrow. EDIT: I'm a dumb fuck and ordered the wrong bellhousing

    Here is the proper bellhousing:

    Bearing retainer and TOB on the way..I did not fuck up this shit thank god... all this crap is expensive.

    Engine and car met for the first time yesterday!

    BTW these pics are BEFORE cleaning the engine... once I clean it up a bit it is going to sparkle. :smokin:

    Only 1900 miles and the rear main seal is leaking a tiny bit, I'll replace it:

    got some good work done today... I was working on the cage but ran outta gas for the welder. The blasting and painting continues! Like I said before -expect to see this color wherever I can use it.

    The arm is dry and the spindle is not:

    Fresh and clean! I'm going to do the LCA after all... everything else looks so good.

      It's all in the detail so they say... I'm going to label every connection -heat shrink nearly every wire -should come out nice. I'm in Lancaster PA with my Mom now and don't have the right tools to de-pin the connectors to get the heat shrink on -I'll do it tomorrow at the shop.

      crap:

      Engine fitting is right around the corner so I threw everything together and stared at it for about an hour. Bonertown :thumbs:

      Preparing for a moch-up it of the engine/trans -should go in this week. In the meantime I got my rad and intake set up in motion -the rad is out having a custom alum shroud built -should have it back in the next few days. I'm hoping to have everything mounted by this weekend -I need to fab up a trans mount and hack up the tunnel to make room for the dogbox. From there it's pretty downhill... driveshaft and wiring -the car should be reborn in a few weeks! :thumbs:

      ^^^ hahhaha it was bone stock back then! Good times -if you get over here this season I'll let you take her out for a spin

      prepped everything for the test fit lastnight -just waiting on the bellhousing.

        Booooya!

        Starting to look like a car... should run soon.

        These pics are not final fit -just a moch up

        The rad, fan and support installs as a whole unit and it held in place with 4 bolts -it is easily accessible/removable -it should clear the hood -if not I'll cut it -I don't care.

        This is the rad support:

        All plumbing is 3.5"

        Filter is this guy

        and I have a 90mm MAF (not installed yet)

        So I fabbed up this little guy today -originally I was going to do a straight bar across kinda like Hinson, Grannies ect... just seemed that the exhaust would be such a PITA that I would rather spend the time on the mount and run a practically straight exhaust. I used some 1/4" thick flat stock and angle with some hefty rectangle bar I had laying around. The mount bolts though the trans tunnel and I made "sandwich plates" out of 10 gauge mild steel on the interior. I still need to weld in the plates -but everything is set.

        Almost there...

        Super progress the past few days...

        Trans is in place -moved on to the rad and intake tonight:

        This hole support is a bolt in affair now -six bolts and the rad and support come out together.

        Started eyeballing the intake:

        shrouding/ducts in the near future.

        Knocked out some more electrical tonight... painted some shit... fuck there is still a ton to do...

        Got my DS today -fits perfect!

        test fitted the dash -need a different shifter lever.

        IT LIVES!!!!!

                  Looking good so far, should be insane when it's done. With I could have sprung for an LS engine.

                        I considered 3-rotor -but this made more sense for so many reasons.

                              Lack of readily available parts -cost -low torque -not many trans options

                              I have driven it a few times already -just need to finish up some details and it will be track ready.
