Any job worth doing is worth doing right. This is right.

I was talking to my dad earlier and he said "damn you are spending alot of time on the rockers." I said, "yeah I know and if it goes as low as I want it to, they will be trashed in a week."

Well today I got the car off the ramps, moved it over a little and got the passenger side up on the ramps.

Decided to start on the rear light I will not be running.

Made a patch for the hole.

Got the patch cleaned up and was a perfect fit. So ready to weld.

All welded in a ground down to flat. Also filled the two little holes on each side of it.

Then got to the rocker and got one patch made and tacked in.

Tomorrow I just need to grind that down and make another little patch. Thankfully this rocker is no where near as bad as the drivers side. Hopefully later this week I can get started on the spare tire well.

Well today I pretty much finished off the drivers side rocker. I got fed up with filling in a group of holes so I just went ahead and cut out the bad section. Its all welded up and just needs a good going over before I lay some filler in. I will do the final clean up when it is ready its just way to cold for filler right now and I will probably do all the filling on the car at the same time. But anyway here are the pics of a (FINALLY) solid rocker.

Plans for tomorrow; get it off the ramps, move the car over a few feet, get the pass side up on the ramps. After that ill get to work on cutting out the patches for that side.

Started today by welding in this patch into the front fenders rocker.

I had a couple of little holes I had trouble filling with weld so I made a tool. Copper pipe to hold behind the hole that I am filling.

Then got started on the last patch of this side.

Tacked the top in and then formed it to the curve of the rocker.

Then went back to all the patches and finished the welding on them, and filled(or tried to) some holes.

Still need to do a little more welding and then go back and grind it all back down smooth. Then light filler, prime, and some texture stone chip spray, I hope it comes out ok.

After the last few weeks of being sick and being out of down, I got some work done. I had a late start but got the holes for the rear side marker filled. Hopefully Ill be able to knock out the rest of the drivers side tomorrow.

If so, and if you have a hammer and dolly, you need to bump on that door a little, hit square on the dolly in the low spots. This will stretch the metal and make it pop out permanently. This equals less filler which is the best thing to do. I had an oilcan on the E21. It works pretty well.

Also, (tell me if you know this stuff so I can shut up) you're not seam welding are you? Running a full bead? You need to stitch weld. Which means spot welds on the patch panel. Keep the heat off the sheet metal by moving around a bunch. This includes grinding as well! The heat makes metal shrink (which is where your dent in the door came from maybe).

Get my number from Mike and call if you need me to clarify. Doing a few things will save you a PILE of work in the long run.
Thanks for all the help. It should make all of this much easier.

Started today welding some bolts on to the body so I could use the slide hammer on the dent.

A little better, I will have to use some filler though. Someone has tried pulling it before and the metal is a little weak, so it kinda popped back in.

Also did a little more work on the rocker, it still needs some grinding and welding but I ran out of wire for the welder.

    12/05/2009

Well today I woke up and put my dad to work.

Welded up the holes for the trim I am not using.

Then went to work on the rockers.

More work tomorrow, hopefully we can get the drivers side done and maybe a little on the pass side.

nice build thread. i feel your pain with the polishing and the rust work. i spent over 600 hours doing all the alloy bits on my motor (there are a alot of bits, including the engine mounts too lol), and while stripping rust and paint with a wire wheel the other day i had bits of wire flying off it and one stuck right into my arm! sand looks like a much better option to me.
keep up the good work, this is going to be sweet when finished.
