Has anyone on here done a craigslist/ebay <$1k car build?

including the sale of my old wheels I ended up paying $850 for these.

so much for budget build. I just bought some wheels that cost more than my entire investment in the car so far. actually, that's not too bad considering prior to wheels I'm only like $1100 into it.

update for mine

-replaced fuel system components and ecu
-painted calipers (from green to black)
-raided the junk yard for miscellaneous parts it needed
-installed a head unit, amp, and sub (all from craigslist)
-stripped the purple window tint and had it retinted

probably $1100 into it right now. next on the list is minor body work/new paint and different wheels

couldn't wait for an official competition...picked up this beauty for $500. Body is pretty straight, Interior is great, and it RUNS! Already cleaned the interior and painted the wheel centers black.

this summarizes my unpublished response to the "stance rant" thread perfectly.

if the scene is coming up short it's on the shoulders of the leaders, the followers are just doing what they're supposed to do.

in regards to the topic at hand, my q45 was purchased for $900. i'm about $15k deep now and maybe half done.

^agreed with all. For me the budget build would just be a cheap fun project, I have no problem spending good money with aftermarket vendors on my newer car. And I've been to Japan...you speak truth.

As far as budget builds go, dollar amounts are of no concern to anyone who is a "true" enthusiast. What stands a build a part from the next is "how" it's built and with "what." If we continue to feed companies that would rip off conceptual and intellectual property in the name of making a 'cheaper' product, then you will see the decline of the aftermarket car part industry as we know it (some will argue that it's been happening for a good while). Having had a little experience at this point, I can tell you guys that it's imperative to our hobby that we support legitimate companies who bring new ideas to the table. While the cost will always be greater, so will the quality. It takes most of us a lot longer to have a car "worthy" in our eyes with quality parts, no doubt. The reward and satisfaction you will have though, far outweighs the timeline it takes.

In Japan, people spend 3, 5, sometimes 10 years building their cars. On top of that, they rarely show off their build until it's complete. They have a vision and they work towards fulfilling it. They don't cut corners, and see it through to the detail. If we, as american car enthusiasts, applied this same mentality, the quality of the car scene as well as the aftermarket support we skyrocket over time.

While I know this thread is all in good fun, and I see nothing wrong at all in having a budget for any build, let's not undermine are future opportunities by indirectly supporting the demise of the very thing we love.
