RS Rebuild pt.5

Okay so it's been pretty quiet lately, been waiting for parts, but I couldn't resist putting the wheels together for a few photos and to see them with the coils and camber arms!
Totally blown away, I love it!





I'm thinking about painting that little hex tool to match the wheels; white with either red or gold for the "BBS Design" logo on the handle. What's everyone's thoughts? I'm not sure

As for other plans?

I saw this video go around Facebook and absolutely lost my god damn mind. Not only over the colour of the caps, which I can't seem to find anywhere? (Help!! I want a set).
But over the fact that floating BBS caps existed! I spent a bit of time trying to find who sold them and found not even the slightest detail. So I thought screw it, I'll make them myself!

I had my spare hex's and caps as I replaced mine, one of the caps were cracked and the hex was a little worse for wear anyway so I thought why not?
I took the caps out and had a look at ways I could do it, made a few measurement and sent out a heap of emails.
My idea, was to try and split the resin logo from the black plastic clips in the cap..

And mounting something like a needle bearing between the two with a weight on the back. Basically I wanted to do it this way to make sure nothing was permanent, I could pull out the cap if it didn't work and my hex would still be fine to use as usual.
I've ordered all the stuff to make one and will post photos as I go.
A question though; I am trying to get the black plastic thread off the back of the hex to send it off to either get gold plated or chromed (haven't decided yet), does anyone know how to do this without damaging it the plastic clips? Heard a few people using screw drivers and forcing it but apparently it ruins the plastic and they aren't reusable..

Update!

Put my shifter assembly together today, really digging it!
Not sure if I want to cover it up with a shift boot now or do a full centre console delete, more decisions



It's just a Likewise Nad, Cube short shifter, and a new OEM rubber boot thing.

Other than that I've been slowly starting the mould for my all carbon fibre hard top.
The standard fibreglass ones are real freaking heavy so time to make a lighter one because #racecar

RS Rebuild pt.6

Well, it's been a while, been absolutely flat out with work and haven't had a heap of time to work on the thing but I guess it's time to show you how the wheels fit up!



They are currently on a 5mm spacer, and I reckon another 5mm and they will be perfect with the amount of camber I'd like to run! We'll have to see when the rear arms are in and new fronts are bolted up and tyres are on.

Because Racecar.

Thanks to my work, I was able to design and have full carbon fibre door cards CNC routed to fit my doors perfectly. I decided to can the speakers in them in fear that they could rattle the cards against the steel skin of the door.
I also got rid of the OEM pull thing/arm rest and left a small hole to mount a nice pull strap (I'm thinking red?) which left the total door card weight just under 600g as opposed to the original which was over 1kg per side.





The door cards are now available to buy in a range of options like with or without speaker holes, pullstrap or OEM arm rest, different materials etc. etc. Just hit up CarbonTEK if you have any questions or want to order a pair!

Yeah not 100% sure on how I want the pull handles, but was thinking something along the lines of red and maybe some white embroidery? Not sure, will have to have a play around and see what I like the look of! Was thinking of using the same colour/material as the 6pt harness when that goes in, just so it all matches ahaha

Carbon everything!

If any of you know me personally you'll know I've been working on a little side project for a while late at night or when things are quiet at work.. That little side project, after 6 months of designing, testing, fitting, rubbing, and shaping, has finally come to life in the form of it's first prototype!



This is my full carbon/kevlar fixed back race seat.
I originally had a fake bride in the car but didn't like it nor the feeling it left in the back of my mind knowing it could full well break at any point being made of cheap materials..
My seat is a full infused and lightweight proper next level racing seat, the shell itself weighs in at sub 3kg and is stiffer BY MILESS than the Bride (over 7kg). I have a video somewhere of me jumping on it and it not even flinching. The next steps are to have it upholstered, cleared, and finally, engineered to full FIA/CAMS and ADR (Australian Design Rules) specifications to ensure it is 100% road and track legal.

These seats, once engineered will be available to the public in a range of options from fibreglass, through to a full carbon and fireproof seat like mine.
I'm yet to come up for a name for it so any suggestions would be amazing :P

The little things

In less exciting news, I finally got around to making a little side mount number plate bracket. I went to the effort of making it brushed aluminium and then realised literally no one will ever see it.. might have to take my plates off at shows just so it wasn't a complete waste of time



My girlfriend pointed out my paint was looking a little dull and personally I didn't see it... Until I hit it with the polishing thing, this was just the first cut using a 400 grit.. liquid? I don't know what to call it, this is literally the first time I'd ever polished anything. Surprisingly, the car looks at least 2394892 times better now, you can even see the difference in the centre brake light

Carbon hardtop

So, I mentioned a couple weeks back I was moulding a hard top to reproduce in carbon fibre? Well that went south pretty quickly when I tried to get the window out.. Trust me, that is not as easy as it looks/sounds.
Because the last time it was painted it wasn't masked well, there was paint bridging between the roof and the seal so once it was off it left this rise, around where the seal had been.. When it comes to making anything in composites, your final product is only as good as your mould, which is only as good as your buck (what you mould), so ANYYY defect in the original part will show in the final carbon one. This meant the roof was rubbed back, and I set to work on priming, filling, priming, rubbing, priming, painting, clearing, rubbing, clearing again and now its ready for it's final rub and polish!
Keep in mind I'm only a YouTube qualified painter, the orange peel is strong in the clear thank god for sand paper

In any other instance, we wouldn't go through this much trouble to repaint it the right colour or use clear, but the roof isn't mine and has to go back to it's owner once we are done, so we had to take the long way around it.
Thankfully it's all 100% perfect now and ready to be moulded in the next week or so!

In other news

Hayden, my brother in law has been hard core guiding me and helping me learn how to weld as I really had no idea what I was doing, just kinda pulled the trigger and hoped for the best, if I could drop it without it breaking, it was mint
Now with his help I've kinda got the hang of MIG welding, and I reckon I am doing alright at it, this photo is unrelated to the mx5 but I figured I would practice on building a few things for work before setting out to fabricate something on the car I drive to work at 100kph every day



Not exactly weld porn, I know, but I'm happy with it none the less, definitely aiming for that penny stacked look, I'm pretty confident now that I could make my own control arms which is exactly what I plan to do in the future as the stupid OEM ones are such a tight fit around my coils that I can't go any lower, which is killing my vibe. Time to make some new ones from scratch!

I also relined and extended my oven to take a few bigger bits of carbon to come in the future
