A cosmo what!?! Lol

Most older BMWs I've seen have this nasty stuff all over the engine bay called cosmoline that's supposed to prevent rust while on the boat from europe to america... Your engine bay is clean and beautiful!

I got it local but you can order it online from anywhere pretty much. Its just closed cell foam

Monday, update time! :-)

Since I've had the car I've been doing bits and pieces to the engine bay as it looked really sorry for itself :-(

So, as it stood when I first got her...

Front and rear rubber bonnet seals missing, dirty, exposed wiring loom, surface rust on bits and pieces, missing under bonnet lining, incorrectly routed washer pipework amongst other things!!







I've covered most of the work to the bay - the heater resto, the under bonnet lining etc... but I'll bring you up to speed on the last couple bits....

I took out the airbox and gave it a make over.... I did do both the upper, lower sections but don't seem to have more pictures, cleaned all the pipework and jubilee clips :roll:







Ordered a couple new seals as they were missing...



Gave the tired looking washer bottle a bit of love!



Renewed, the pipework and clips, along with new runs of pipework to the jets taking the correct routing





Little bits a pieces BUT I needed to give the engine bay a good clean, I'm no 'detailer' so I read up and ordered some Autosmart G101 degreaser, I needed a couple brushes to work the cleaner in with, now screw speeding 10-15 quid on a detailing brush! so..... LMAO



And after..... using an old paint brush handle... cut down the bristles on one of them to make it a more coarse brush :lol: :lol: :lol:



Gave the engine bay a good going over this weekend with the G101 and my awesome brushes!!! It came up soooo much better! It could do with some more work but I got bored LOL

Afters..... I'm happy with how the bays starting to shape up! Still along way to go!

An update to end the week!

After a (fingers crossed) successful last leak test it was time to get the carpet back in to the car! Now the OE underlay was total ruined so I had to come up with an alternative..... back to my now favorite foam suppliers for some 15mm high density chipfoam!

After a couple evenings for cutting and fitting I ended up with this...







I had to mould a new section in the driver side for the foot rest bulge in the carpet



Then it was time to get the carpet back in, after a really good deep clean and hoover, took my time and cracked on refitting the centre console, glovebox etc....

Starting to look like a car!!





As with teverything, before it went back in the car it got a good cleaning! The steering wheel was no different as it was disgusting!

Doesn't look too bacd!....



Yes it is!





Grim!!



And a couple after.... nice and clean, needs a recondition but no hurry :-)







And a couple where the interior stands at the moment, ongoing problems with the heater so the control panel is in bits and the instrument is coming out but thats for another update!

Cracking on with the updates and progress and other couple small jobs, one important, on not so.... :lol:

Firstly as always the important one! During one of the many leak tests on the old girl saw water dropping in through a wiring loom grommet on the driver side so....

The leaky little so and so..... the 'sealant' was very hard



So much so it came away in one piece :roll:



Using some bitumen based rain gutter sealant I ran a nice new bead around the grommet and bobs your uncle..... no more leak.... from there at least!



Something abit more decorative now.... in the centre console I've got this not so nice cubby hole tray.... most e24's I've seen have a quite slick looking curved grill type thing to hide the depths of the dash but no, not this car! :lol: it was in a real bad way through years of neglect



Got the rubber strips out and gave it a good sand down



I had some wood stain knocking around in the cupboards so gave it a couple good coats, let it dry and put it all back together.... well happy with the result!! I've no got a picture of it fitted up so will grab one soon

Your work looks solid man. I see there was rust in alot of the same places as on my e28..
