  • [Type 17] VW Golf GTI "Trophy" Mk1

My '83 Golf GTI Trophy (yes on this side of the pond we name it like this...)

This is a special swiss edition called "Trophy" which is basically a GTI with almost full options...

I bought it in 2004, and used it as a daily for the next 4 years, it is "almost" full stock, the aim is to keep it like this with minor interventions to keep it clean...

After driving it for a while lowered with coilover and 7x13 ET0 ATS Classics with homologated slicks, I decided to put it a bit higher and put a set of -40mm Eibach and Konis and replace the ATS by a set of restored AVUS (original rims)

The paint is accumulating the years, the clearcoat is going elsewhere.. (the car has never been restorated) but there is no rust at all...

    Some pictures...

some of the parts I worked on:

    Original Teile..

    Cache courroie avant:

    sandblasted thermocoated...

    new seal

    Before

    After

We reomved the rusty parts and put renewed ones

    It seems better like this

    Some more work:
    Before

    After

    we changed the fan

    Seems all right now

      Thanks,

some other parts, have been restored,

the starter had some problems, so I rebuilt a new one, sandblasted, clearcoated were the metal was bare, and painted in black as original

I also changed the front engine support, and removed this prothane silentbloc, which was to hard for me...

        Some more work,
I changed the horn's support, and replaced it by a Porsche 924 model, which is more resistant

        The horn:

        sandblsted:

        Painted in black...

On small detail on the front bumpers, one of the 4 bolts is longer than the 3 others, this is the one that support the horn

After 24 years the radiator started to leak...

1988... 5 years younger than the car (we don't see anything on the picture but you have to trust me)

          The leak:

          The good and the ugly:

          Everything rebuilt:

          With new silenblocs:

some parts have been renewed as usual:

          More to come..

Some pictures of an original VW Motorsport front grill (estimated power gain +50hp )

Marchal Lights, exist in yellow or white, unefortunately mines are yellow

lights circling is different from the original grill

            Yes it is

there are no ref numbers, or anything else to identify the grill

            A trip to the mountains:

            Then a carwash:

Some more work on the Trophy

                    Rebuilt of the driveshafts

I tested my powder coat gun, sanded and thermocoated it's better now

Ready to be put back on the car

                    Here we are..

On my way to doing this, I decided to change the gearbox support,
I removed the polyurethane silent bloc which was really too hard

Some more work, and new parts

The car is ready for another race...

                          Thanks,

some more work on the car...

I put a Gr. A exhaust on it

Muche more lighter than the original one, and a bit more louder, but not too much

I also changed some the bolts which are on firewall, which were making some noise (totally rust)

                            Some news

                            In July racing again,
how do you name it? Hill climb?

this time in Col Saint Jean, which is part of the mythic Rallye Monte Carlo

                            5km long, with 4 runs

I was not alone, my friends from VRP (Ventabren Retro Passion)

There were some Golfs in the team...

The whole team in the paddock:
