  • New DD and Project: the "Rexxus"

Not sure why i never posted this on here but here goes...

1996 LS400, Metalic Silver on Grey leather interior, full load with the Nakamichi sound system (still an amazing system considering it's age!) 181,469km when I bought it, was a fresh rebuild but only got lightly tagged in the rear and the insurance company didn't even bother to properly assess the damages. I had it on the hoist and went over it with a fine tooth comb and was in amazing shape. No way it was worse than a $1500 hit. So I got this thing for a steal of a deal. Needs a little maintenance work but I expected that with any used car. Paid $3500 for the car and have already ordered $2900 in parts including some new BC BR coils, new crystal clear headlights and red/clear/red LED tails, lots of maintenance stuff, hiJacked a set of 06 GS430 wheels for the interim.

As she was the day I bought her: Sorry for the crappy iphone pics.

as she sits now, still nothing special as none of my parts will be in till the 10th-12th...

I am planning to upgrade the BC's with a UAS kit in the summer. I only plan to keep the car a few years as my goal is to find a nice 2005/2006 LS430. One that I can swap all my suspension parts over too, build myself a proper set of wheels and keep that car for a decade. slam it and use it as a DD.

If we both find some time, my buddy Greg and I (since I left my welder and all my fabricating tools back in vancouver with my dad) will be building an exhaust for the car this winter.

Being back in school, I'm on a tight budget... Ballin' on a budget so to speak! So parts are only purchased after I sell something from my race car, which would explain the slow progress since purchase in the far of 2012.

Some of my other personal cars and previous projects of note:

    The porker:

I got out to shoot some shots of Mitch's amazingly gorgeous and very fast Porsche. Enjoy a glimpse at the behind the scenes from the shoot.

Picked up a set of Maya STMs that needed work for a screaming deal. I've been building wheels for years and have made lost of friends, one of them runs the best wheel refinishing business in the area and hooked my hop with straightening and refinished the lips and another does all my powder coating for a case of beer...

But i didn't like how they looked on the car during the test fit, so i put them up for sale finished however the new owner wanted. found a buyer, he wanted them with flat black centres and turned a really nice profit.

So the search continued and then I found a set of the wheels I have wanted for years... but they needed work too but i got them for almost exactly what i sold the Maya's for!

Only problem was FedEx dumped the wheels off a loading dock at some point during shipping and bent each one slightly more than the next. Luckily they were fully insured and i got 100% of the value plus shipping back in compensation from FedEx.... so much nicer to deal with then UPS! Did a quick little test fit before making a call to my buddy at the refinisher:

Before sending them off to be refinished, also ordered a Aisin timing belt kit, new temp sensor, Lower control arm bushings, rear carrier bushings and of course, new Moog Upper control arms.

      Untitled by ZX3Tuning, on Flickr

While i waited for the wheels to get refinished I tackled the engine bay and some long overdue maintenance: power wash, valve covers, water pump, timing belt kit, caps/rotors/wires/plugs, pcv, intake & TB flush/cleaning, coolant flush, oil and PS changes, tensioner, idler, Serp belt and fan bracket.

I'm jelly of the awesome wheel connects you have for paint/refinish. Keep it up..

                    Thanks for the compliments!

I bought the wheels knowing they'd be a bit sunk compared to how most guys choose wheel specs for these cars. I have a big OCD thing about maximizing my inner fitments before working over the outside fitments, I have about 3mm of clearance front he spoke the calliper in the front and am off the knuckle by 5mm up front. I have a lot more space in the rear, but that's what you get when buying used... fort of have to take it as they are. I have yet to measure the clearance on the rears on the inside, since the shock will be moving and i may be adding more camber, I don't want to commit to a new barrel until i have my aired out clearance dialled. Plus once I finish machining my rear shock drops, i'll probably gain another 20-30mm of clearance, which means that with some more rolling and pulling I should be able to flush-up/tuck some 12.5s, maybe 13s in the rear.... No crazy camber though, don't want more than -5º since this is my daily.

I don't know where you live but the hookups are all about building relationships the right way. My powdercoater sat be side me for 5 years at our local Junior Hockey team... Getting drunk and screaming at teenagers to fight more does wonders for building a strong work relationship! haha
And the wheel refinisher was a buddy of a buddy that I vaguely knew through work. He was always impressed by the cars I put out and it went from paying a standard industry rate to "blow-your-socks-off" sorts of deals. I always took care of him though, and never pressed for anything more than he'd give. With the FedEx fumble, I gave him all the money I got back in exchange for all the help over the years. Cost me nothing so why not? And NOW I have perfectly refinished Ordens for less than half retail!

14 years as a Master Automotive Tech yields the box, going back to school for engineering so now it's sort of a boat-anchor. Except when I play with the car or jobs around the house.

Yesterday basically ended up being a write-off for work on the car. Got everything moved over to the shop and stripped the trunk so I could start building the floor and me rear wall in prep for everything else. The neighbour asked me to stop after only an hour of work so not much progress...
