  • Daily Driver Project because new cars suck

So I currently have a newer Subaru and in the past year have gained a distaste for newer cars so the idea started going through my head to build a daily driver that wouldn't be perfect but would be old and awesome. This build will go slowly though because my focus is getting my 2002 where I want it but I'll slowly be chipping away on it.

In the midwest, for some reason people just leave cars... well everywhere. My dad was buying a 69 Impala SS with a parts car and the guy had a neglected Fastback sitting around and decided to throw it in on the deal. I made a deal with my dad to help him out work wise in trade for the Fastback. It hasn't moved since 96 but surprisingly isn't too rusty compared to most I've seen in the Midwest.

Its a long ways from being road ready but with the 2002 almost finished up I'm ready for another project plus its my first air-cooled which means loads of learning because its only my second ever VW and the other was a MK3 and haven't had it for 10 years. I'm pretty stoked for the build and hope you enjoy.

First up.. dent removal . The fender, roof and hood all had soft dents so with the palm of my hand I knocked those out, there is one on the pillar which will obviously need to come out but my dad and I are fairly confident that it will come out, some out the back glad didn't break, just popped out so I have that safely sitting inside for now.

First up will be an ignition because there was no key but after that I'll start on cleaning it up and getting the mechanics worked out since its been sitting for a decade.

Honestly not sure yet lol, I have a feeling it will have some hotrod influence but not to sure if ill rat it or make it nice. Knowing me and my OCD it will turn out nice lol. Probably all depends on how well the dent in the rear pillar comes out.

Thanks everyone, bit overwhelmed just because I've never owned an aircooled but I'm pretty stoked at the same time. Current item I'm trying to tackle is getting a key, I got this car with no key so I pulled the column and am in the process of pulling the ignition so I can have a key made, ran into a wall tonight though because I didn't have a 27mm to get the wheel off. So instead I did some cleaning and also primered the column, decided everything I pull off will get painted. Planning on leaving the patina on the body but the ocd in me will make everything else look fresh including the interior to an extent.

Column out all dusty and dirty

Then did some cleaning and primered the bottom of the column, will be getting some fresh black paint tomorrow

Then since this is a budget build, I fixed the broken taillight that I found laying in the back seat, all the pieces there.. lucky.

When pulling the column, I had to pull the tank which to my surprise had been drained out which was a welcome surprise as I was worried it wouldn't be useable since it had been sitting.

i really like the fastbacks and the patina, i'm excited to see what happens. I've wanted to find a type 3 for a while now but everyone i find is really far away.

These are quality. Someone turned up in the uni car park in one and looked sweet.

Looks like you got a lot of work to do on it but fair play for doing it, i wouldn't haha
