  • My rally car isn't rally low...yet...

I love lurking on here. Almost everyday I'm on here checking out the builds or the classifieds. I've always wanted to put a build thread up, but I've either had a shit car or I think my car isn't changing enough to be put on here. Well i finally sucked it up and am going to start a thread. I am a first year engineering student, so funds are low, but everything i make either goes to living or into my car. In the summer months the build should pick up.

So in the past July I needed a car as i had not had one for the past 6 months and needed someway to get to work. My heart was set on an Audi as i had owned 3 VW's previous. ( MK4 Jetta, MK2 Golf, MK1 Rabbit) I had found one and took the bank draft out in the owners name, but he called me 2 days before i went to pick it up and had snapped the timing belt. Well i definitely dodged a bullet there. After the disappointment I had no clue what to try to find. And nice cars aren't a dime a dozen here in Saskatchewan, Canada.

After looking around I picked up this gem. ( yes i only own an iPhone )

    1997 Mitsubishi Evolution IV GSR
Now has 130,000 KMs on the odo.
Came from the factory with Recaro seats, Momo steering wheel and OZ Racing Wheels.
I know its not low, but once the wheels are on, it will be.

    Mod List:

Exterior: Stock other than Hella foglights, ralliart mud flaps and OEM window visors.

Interior: Some no name JDM rpm gauge and boost gauge, AEM A/F gauge, ralliart shift knob, torque solutions short shifter and pedals and a touchscreen deck with Nav and full alpine speakers.

Suspension: BC Racing Type BR Coilovers, Strut bars.

Engine: Japspeed O2 housing, Blitz Japan 3" Downpipe, Japspeed test pipe, Greddy Ti-C muffler with 4.5" tip, Apexi Intake, Mishimoto Rad, Samco hoses, intercooler hard pipe kit, Walbro 255lph fuel pump, Evo 8 560cc injectors, fuel lab fpr, Forge recirculating valve, turbosmart waste gate actuator, tuned Evo 6 ECU.

The first thing i did myself was get rid of the Japanese headunit, which wouldn't tune into North American radio waves. (went as high as 79.9) Bought a used touchscreen with Nav, Sat. radio and all the fixings.

Next i moved the battery to the trunk and replaced it with an all lead one. I also got rid of the grounding kit, it uncluttered the bay a little.

I was on the fence about stance with this car for quite some time... mainly because i couldn't find any examples to go off of. The stock wheel specs were awful. 16"x6.5" Et46 . Late one night after working on a buddy's R32 GTR i tested fitted his 17"x 9" Work Emotions. Ill just let the pics talk...

I did have full steering capabilities without rubbing, but that poke was way too much and I'm not a body work kind of guy. So those wheels were out the window.

After that i was on the search for wheels, since my car had a lot of engine mods i thought i would lay off on those for awhile. I threw on my Ti-C muffler too. It gave the car much more of a bark.

So i stumbled upon some real beat to shit rims... but i got them for $200 which i thought was a steal for discontinued JDM wheels. 17"x 8" Et of about 35. Work Equips.

Luckily, the specs were perfect! just a small bit of poke. i bought them staggered though and two of the lips were badly damaged from a "drift" accident that the previous owner was in.

I immediately started to break them down. and I am now looking for 4 2" 36 hole lips. could anyone tell me what they are? flat, stepped, reverse? i honestly don't know the difference.
I hope to have them all done by the time spring comes around, with polished lips and bolts, and the centres will be done to match the car's body colour or maybe something different. any thoughts are welcome.

Within the next week a Mishimoto intercooler is also going to be fitted. will have updates when its on.

Finally here is my favourite picture of the car, taken at a local meet here in Regina by Ryan Benoit of Dodologic.

i will be trying to update soon! any help with wheel parts would be appreciated.

stop before you ruin your car. this is the only car that a lot will accept being close to stock height. big turbo and then tell everyone else to eat a dick. i love these cars.

man do what makes you happy! If I had an evo or sti, I'd pick rally coils ANY day of the week.

Well it's not going to be a rally car ever. It gets driven daily and is a winter monster. So it's not something that doesn't get driven hard. But I wouldn't mind a bit of stance. I don't really wanna put much more into it performance wise because id rather have a evo 9 or evo x to dump money into for performance. This engine is such an early version of the newer 4G63 that the bugs aren't all worked out and you can't get the same power the mivec evo 9 engine can get. And I've never seen one stanced. That's why I want to go that route somewhat.

you have a good point. you should do an engine swap from the newer ones lol ($$$$). you should start with buying some coilovers that will allow you to go stupid low. i know cxracing is a pretty good company but im not sure if they sell them for your car.

The BC racing coils will sit it right on the down pipe. I am keeping the current height for winter but come summer in going to slam it. I want to make something to protect my flexpipe though. Also I need to relocate my oil filter because it is stupid low and punctures easy.

I just need an evo V engine. Still better then the evo iv motor.

nice! you can easily relocate your oil filter with longer oil lines and then probably fabricating a mount for the oil filter somewhere else in the engine bay. its probably easier said then done lol

Well winter came and the Evo loved it.

                            [IMG]/IMG]

I also found a picture of it from one of the car shows earlier this year. I was pretty pumped to see it!

                            [IMG]/IMG]

                            Then some asshole hit me...

                            [IMG]/IMG]

                            [IMG]/IMG]

Of course the person fled as it was parked. I don't want to go through insurance because it will quite possibly get totalled off.
So now I am in a struggle to get parts... I can't even source them.
On the bright side of things, I ordered myself an early Christmas present.

                            [IMG]IMG]

                            Brian Crower 272/272 Intake/Exhaust cams.
I am extremely excited to get these put in!
Just ordered my ob2 port cable so i can start logging some pulls and get the timing perfect.

Not much of an update but hopefully when the snow melts and i finish my second semester of school big things will come!

This is probably the worse EVO they ever made, keen to see someone make something of it.
